What do you tell your tween daughters (ages 7-14), about skin and hair care/personal hygiene? I am the mother of a tween girl and the founder of Ottilie & Lulu, a skin and hair care line for tween girls, and I am always interested in how mothers introduce personal hygiene to their daughters.

I am very blunt with my daughters who are 5 and 12. I tell them the positivity of drinking plenty of water. They are not allowed to drink juice unless it is made with real fruit through our juicer. I try to eat right and stay away from candy and other foods that are not good for them. I make sure they take there vitamins as well. Unfortunately what you put into your body doesn't smell good at all when it comes out. I tell my girls about tight clothing, using powder and oils that will not clog up their pores. Mainly staying away from things that have petroleum in it and I also make them use Dove sensitive soaps and wash using their hands and not a wash cloth. If they take care of themselves (my girls) then chances are they won't have bad vaginal odors or bad underarm odors. In regards to their hair, they wash it every two weeks and also use items in their hair that doesn't clog up their pores. My daughters developed a great habit cleaning themselves without me having to breathe down their necks. My little one is really good as well. She is very anal about her smell and will ask me to help her any way possible. I would like to research your skin care line. Maybe that is something else we can put in our cabinets. They also know that brushing their teeth and flossing is ideal. I tell them how important it is for them brush twice a day and how the dentist with cleanings can be your friend. check out dr. sunyatta's website. She is really good. You can google her.

I started my kids about deodarant and cleaning their skin after i heard a teacher comment that her classroom stinks after recess... she was a 4th grade teacher and said that some of the kids just sweat so much after running around.. and the closed in classroom really smells badly.. well when my son got to 4th grade.. I kind of said it's the law that you have to use deodarant.. and taught him after sports to clean his face off.. and then at night with noxema.. his skin is beautiful and he is almost 14.. never had a break out.. maybe one pimple here or there... but not much at all.. my daughter is in 5th and uses deodarant.. haven't gotten her into the habit of washing her face every day.. she does sometimes.. she isn't like him...

I appeal to my 10-year-old daughter's emerging sense of vanity. I remind her about the "smelly kid" in school whose pungent aroma often clears a five-foot radius around him on the playground, and tell her if she doesn't shower every day SHE'S going to become the smelly kid. It always works.

Okay mom brace yourself, because this piece of advice is one of life's simplest treasures. Look in the mirror and love who you are, your gifts, strengths and talents. Then love the hand that god dealth to you. If you think yours are bad just look around you--no one is perfect. It appears that although some may have attractive outside features their insides usually don't match. Learn to be your own best friend. If you can be alone and love it with all of (you) its' ups and downs, only then can you be a best friend to anyone else. Okay, here's the one i saved for last... Be natural! Seldom do we find natural beauty, it's usually pasted over, painted differently and costly to maintain. For body odors mix bacon soda and vaseline--especially for athletes, underneath those arm pits. Trust me on this one it really works. Change twice a day. Wash after every bathroom movement--i'm keeping it natural (-: and, last but not least never compare what you have or don't have enough of to someone else. In essence, never envy or wish you were someone else. Because it is written that, "every 0thing that glitters is not gold". Mo'blessings

My girls are 6 and 3 right now, so I haven't quite gotten there yet. I have discussed showering/bathing with my 6 yr old. I too told her she could be "the stinky kid" if she doesn't bathe regularly. I have always had acne, even now at age 35. I tell her how important it is to wash her face so that I can keep it under control and so hopefully she won't have the same issue. If she does, it won't be for lack of trying! Once they get closer to puberty, I will help them get into a routine with more specific products. Would be intrested in seeing your stuff.
