My son who is almost 3, was just diagnosed with a hydrocele and has to have surgery. Has anyone's son had this or know someone who has? We are wondering when we should do the surgery and which surgeon to use. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My son just underwent inguinal hernia repair by Dr. Darrell Hermann ###-###-####. He is extremely friendly and my son enjoyed talking to him. He has a causal attitude and is easy to talk to. My son was back to normal activity the next day. Dr. Hermann was easy to get in to see, and we were scheduled for surgery the next week. The office staff did a great job with scheduling the surgery. The surgery was done at Pediatric Surgery Center in Plano. I would recommend this center as well. The center is clean and has a good process to move your child through the different areas for surgery. Each child gets their own DVD to watch while waiting. Good luck!

N., I have 3 boys. My oldest is now 19 and had this when he was a baby. He had surgery when he was about 6 y/o. Once they got in there they did hernia repair. He has done great and did not ever have anymore problems. I could find out the surgeon's name, and I believe it was done at Baylor in Dallas. I hope everything goes well.

My son had a hydrocele right before he turned three. My aunt is a pedriatric surgeon and recomended Dr. Darrell Hermann ###-###-#### as she has personally worked with him. She said they are VERY common! If it happens under 1 year they usually watch it as it may go away on its own. But by three they do surgery. Darrell performed my sons surgery and was very gentle and kind! My son was running around in no time afterwards. I also taught preschool and had a boy in my class who had a hydrocele. I recomended to his mother she take him into see a doctor and I think she was too scared to realize he might need surgery, but after many months she finally did and also saw Darrell Hermann (out of Presby Plano). She too had a wonderful experience with him. He ended up doing both sides even though my son had it in only one scrotum so he would not have to go through surgery again. He also used stitches underneath and glue ontop. My son is now five and you can't even tell he had this done. his scare is right on his crease. Good Luck and email me if you have any questions! The recomendation from Children's hospital looks pretty good too :) L.

My son had the surgery when he was 1 1/2. We had it done at Cook's in Fort Worth, we used Dr. Jeff Pugach. He is an urologist and was great with my son and made it very easy on us. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. Honestly, it was harder on me than it was on him. He was back to normal the next day.

My son had surgery for his hydrocele when he was 4. He was up and running around within hours after the surgery and never had any complaints. A year later he had a hernia on the other side (as well as an umbilical hernia). He recovered fast from that surgery too. Little kids bounce back extremely fast. We were prescribed pain medication, but we never needed to use it.

Hi, my son, now 2.5 yrs had the surgery to have the tube closed off 4 months ago. We chose to have both sides done at the same time because there is a chance of the fluid moving to the other side and a second surgery would be necessary. It was a day surgery and he did very well, though out of it and sick from the medication for one day but he was up and around the next day...didn't slow him down at all. He has a very small scar on each hip. His doctor recommended a pediatric urologist, Dr. Warren Snodgrass at ###-###-####. He and his staff were very nice to work with. Hope this helps!

My son had this surgery when he was 2 1/2. It was a day surgery, he did have to be put under but the surgery was quick and we left the hospital within hours. He was running around by the time we got home as if nothing happened! I do not recall using very much pain medication for him either.

My son had this done when he was 4. It was amazing, the very next day, his activities were back to normal (running and jumping and everything he would normally do in a day). I would recommend getting done as soon as you can because of the risk of it becoming excruciatingly painful and other complications that could arise. We had it done on a U.S. Military Base in England by Military doctors, so I can't give you any advice regarding the surgeon.

My son was born with a hydrocele, just so you know it is also called an inguinal (sp?) hernia, same thing really. It just means the fluid from the stomach goes into the scrotum. Anyway, they usually go away by the time the child is 1-2 years old (I did tons of research) but sometimes they don't. My son was about 3 1/2 months old and his actually moved to one side (the left side went away on its own) and became really hard and big, we thought it had turned into a real hernia. So after we rushed him to the emergency room and found out it was not a hernia. A hernia is when the intestine goes down in there. So then when my son was 8 1/2 months we did the surgery to repair the hydrocele or inguinal hernia. We went with Dr. Roden, the reason he was chosen is because a very good friend of mines father was the CEO/VP of Children's Hospital in Dallas, he made the recommendation and knew Dr. Roden, he works out of Medical City and was a very good doctor, he told us every thing we needed to know and was very polite, I would us him again in a heartbeat and of course the recommendation coming from our friends father was even better. I hope this helps, don't worry too much, it took our 8 month old about 1 week to feel 100% better, because your son is 3 and much more active he will probably do much better. The incision was closed with the glue and he has no scar. Good luck and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me. My son is now 16 months old and you would never know he had any kind of surgery.

When my son was 3 1/2, he had one and had day surgery at Children's. It was really easy and the people at Children's are wonderful. I was referred to our pediatric urologist by Willow Bend Pediatrics in Plano. I can't remember the Dr.'s name, now (almost 2 years later). You might call them and ask if you live in/around Plano. ###-###-####.

Just from my standpoint-the only pediatric urologist in the Falls is not a good one (I can't remember his name off the top of my head). He misdiagnosed my son saying all he had was hydroceles and he ended up having a very large inguinal hernia that my son had to have surgery on at 10 weeks. I would request going to OK children's hospital if they will let you. That's where we have been twice for two different surgeries and we absolutely loved them---they are all so nice. It is a 2 hour drive but you get great service with people that operate on children all day and understand your worries and concerns. My friend's son has a hydrocele that he has had since birth and they told them if he still had it at 15 months they will do surgery, so it does have to be surgically corrected sometimes. Hope this helps.

You should go to a pediatric urologist. Dr.William Strand in
Plano is a wonderful doctor, very professional and really takes the time to explain things to parents. He did the surgery on my two children.... I hope this helps and good luck to you.

My son was thought to have this as well and we went to Dr. Clayton Harrison. He was great and I highly recommend him. Dr. Harrison did our son's circumcision and was going to fix his hydocele but found him to be fine and recommended no sugery for this.

we personally did not have hydrocele but when my daughter was 2.5 she had a traumatic brain injury form a car accident and we had PHENOMENAL care from Dr. Donahue - a neurosurgeon at cook childrens, we were also seen by Dr. Marks a neurologist at cooks and they worked as a team over her care. My husband works in medical information and research in neurology and these guys are considered very highly in their peer group. . . I loved them and they took great care of my daughter who is pretty much 100% recovered.

I will definitely say a prayer for you and your family. Please take care!

It has been almost 22 years ago that we faced the same with out middle son. Do the surgery because the longer you wait the weaker the area becomes and longer to repair. Plus with his age he will recover quicker and it will be done. Research your surgeons to do the surgery or if you trust your pedi let them suggest but still follow up on the doctor and see how many they do and what type of closures they use. In todays medical society many incisions are not being closed with liquid adhesives and there is less scaring. Check it out
good luck
