Hi there!

I was wondering if anyone can help us with troubleshooting this problem. His laptop is a few years old and has been working fine up until this evening. Recently when he turned it on, he'd hear the start up sound and the screen saver appeared for a second and went black. Now the screen saver picture of our kids doesn't even appear.

Thanks so much in advance. I hope someone can direct us in the right direction. Anyone tech savy on Mamapedia tonight?

Oh... we've tried removing the battery and waiting a minute and putting it back in, but that's not working. We've been checking online to read similar issues but nothing is working. I wonder if Dell would offer free advice???

What can I do next?

Well... NEXT thing to check (after power and hard reset) is the "brightness" level. This has happened once or twice with ours, and it's freaky... then "Oh. Duh. Dangit!"

Which is my big suspicion since it "sounds" like it's running AND your screen saver popped up.

My daughters computer screen is broken,,wont lite up, but the computer still works. its all about the connection from the computer to the screen itself in her case. So we took a regular desk type monitor from an old computer and hooked it to her laptop and she can see everything just fine on the monitor. You might try that and see if it is just the screen, or if the whole computer is shot.I do believe you can hook one laptop to another with the right cord. So if you have a computer too, you can find out the problem that way.

I'm not a computer person.lol.... But our laptop was working before. We turn ours on and a heard a loud beep noise and it was black. Pretty much everything went black. We just waited a minute and then took the battery out and re-put it in. Turn it back on and started back up,updating everything and its working. Hope this helps a little. I Don't know much about computers.lol.

Well, hubby got a new laptop this summer. It had been working fine, and then one day, it would turn on for just a bit, then turn off.... he tried to drain the battery and recharge it, but no luck. (I really don't know if much of anything was working).....

It was still under warranty, so he called the CS number, and they went through some questions, and told him to send it in...

The entire motherboard had to be replaced.

You may just have to take it somewhere for some diagnostics. Fortunately, for us, there was no charge, since it was under warranty... we did have to pay for shipping, which ended up being about $20.

I really hope... your Husband regularly backs-up his computer???

The computer may have crashed.
Or is on its way out.

Take out your Dell papers/paperwork.
Call them.
Tell them what is happening.
I hope, your Husband also has all his passwords etc., not only on the computer?

You may have to somehow get the computer to start in "safe mode."
This is when, the computer is 'dying' or cannot start in its regular mode.

Regardless, you need to call Dell.
Whether or not you have to pay.
Dell, is good per service.

It could be your mother board, your hard drive, your whole system, that is having problems.
It could be a variety of things.
But call, Dell.
They have to walk you through, questions/answers per your computer and what is happening.

that happened to my computer once.
My Computer was dying.
But I don't know if your Husband's case.
So, call Dell.
If you do not know what you are doing... you could make it worse.
Main thing, is, if you can, is to BACK up your computer.
Meaning... via an External, hard-drive.
But you wouldn't be able to do that if the computer can't even boot up.

Call Dell and ask... it can't hurt.

We have 2 Dell Laptops and they are great. I do have the FULL coverage on both and they have been out to my house to replace parts before.

Best Buy is another good option for repair. They have done good work for use as well.

I got my Dell from Dell and he got his from Best Buy. Daughter has the MacBookPro from Best Buy.

My screen has done that and they came out and replaced a part. Works like a charm now! Fortunately, I was completely covered under warranty.

Sounds like a problem with the screen or the graphics chipset. Try connecting the laptop to an external screen and see if it comes up.
You can call Dell's customer service and they will try to walk you through a couple of steps to resolve the issue - but since it's an older computer it's time is probably just up. Typically you can only get 3-5 years out of a laptop before things start breaking...
