I am needing to get a humidifier for my son who is six months old. He is waking up with some congestion and had really dry skin. It has been very hot and dry here and our house has very little moisture in it due to the heat outside and the AC running all the time inside. I was researching humidifiers and am looking at the Crane line. What is the difference between the Nursey Ultrasonic cool mist and the regular cool mist humidifiers- is is neccessary to get the one labled "nursery"?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your insight. I did call our pedi and she said any cool mist humidifier will work. I am going to go get one today. Thanks again.

We bought a Vicks brand humidifier and it works well to moisten the air, but when our babies were congested we bought a vicks Vaporizer instead and it worked to relieve the congestion. when we bought the vaporizer we also bought the Kaz brand inhalant steam activator. I have the box with me now. It reads: Kaz inhalant provides symptomatic relief of cold, croupy coughs, and chest congestion. A special blend of aromatics: Eucalyptus oil, menthol, camphor, methyl salicylate and either lavender oil and peppermint oild and mint essential oil, in a mineral base. Questions or comments call 1-800-827-6712. bar code is 0 ###-###-#### 5. That is what we used and it always helped our kids when they were babies. We would place the vaporizer close by, but not directly next to them so they could breath in the steam activated treatment and it helped. I also remember that the doctor recommended us to prop up the babies while they slept to make it easier for them to breathe. My kids are now 9 and 5, but I remember how hard it is when your kids get sick as babies. As for your baby's dry skin, have you tried the aveeno baby products? they are great! They have an oatmeal bath just for kids. I have eczema myself, and my kids have a bit of it too. The aveeno products are pretty gentle. i hope this helps! Good luck!

We used a humidifier when ours was congested, didn't notice a lot of help breathing, you might want to try saline drops in the nose and then using the bulb syringe to suck it out (worked the best for our daughter). Also, just like we sleep better elevated when we are sick, try putting towels under the bed to elevate the head (or sleep in the swing/ baby seat). I'd stay away from the vaporizers because at 6mts. your little one will be crawling soon or rolling and you don't want him to accidentaly touch it and burn him self, if you want to try the steam, bring him into the bathroom and run the shower on hot and you two play on the floor. Also, try Aveeno or Lubriderm for the skin.
Good luck!!

I went to Target and got the one that was labeled Vicks. I don't use Vick's in it but it works great. You need one that is cool and not hot (just in case baby touches it). You do not need fancy. Also look for something that is easy to clean. You will need to dump the water at least every two days to keep bacteria out. I try to remember to dump mine the morning after but sometimes time doesn't allow.

Hi K.,
Besides the humidifer try elevating the head of the bed or putting the baby on a wedge to stop the congestion. If the congestion does not go see an ENT doctor. My son had congestion most of his life. He is now 6 years old. I had a soft tissue xray of his head. His adenoids were so enlarged he could hardly breath. He had them removed and is so clear now.

We always used regular humidifiers for our babies. If you want to feel more comfortable with it, call your pediactrician's nurse and get her recommendation.
