Hi Mamas,

My husband played basketball two nights ago and got hit pretty hard in the jaw. He has had TMJ for years, but I've never heard it pop as loudly as it does now. He said it hurts to chew food and it hurts all the way up to his ear. He also has bad headaches the last two days.

Is this an injury that just needs some time to heal or does he need an X-ray? He's one of those guys who hates going to the doctor, so I'd love to hear what you mommas suggest. He might listen if someone else has insight! I am worried about a mild concussion or that he had his jaw knocked out of place.

Thanks so much, Dr. Mommas!

What can I do next?

Two suggestions that have worked for me after I thought I was never going to get my life back from TMJ.

1- Dr. David Toney in Allen fit me with a night guard that has almost completely relieved the pain - and it was bad. Dr. Toney is a fabulous dentist. ###-###-####

2- Once the pain gets stabilized, go to Dr. Russell in McKinney. Phone: ###-###-#### This sounds goofy, I know, but it eliminated the last of the pain I had from TMJ. Dr. Russell is a chiropractor and he has a male massage technician that is excellent with facial massage. Don't let them put you with the other massage techs, they are good, but not as skilled as the male is with facial work. It's fairly reasonable - like $40 a treatment. I went 3 times and the facial massage was amazing for eliminating the pain. I had never used a chiropractor before and wasn't sure about them, but they have made a huge difference for me.

If I don't wear the night guard, though, it will all come back, but these two things together have kept me pain free.

He does need to see a dentist. In the mean time put ice on it and take aspirin or motrin. That's about it until a doctor can get to him.

Get x-rays

The only way to know for sure is to check it out. That way, you have peace of mind. He can get out of pain! It is not fun when hubbies are not well and in pain!!

He needs to get it checked. It sounds like he could have torn one of the ligaments in the jaw joint (I forget what it is called). This happened to me when I was in HS and it was painful and took a very long time to heal.

Sounds to me like he should see his dentist or doctor for X-rays. There may not be much that can be done about it other than resting his jaw (i.e. chewing & talking as little as possible) and taking anti-inflammatories, but it might need additional treatment. Plus, because it's his mouth, you don't want to run the risk of his jaw getting some kind of infection. That could result in major tooth issues and expensive reconstruction.
