My husband birthday is coming up Dec. 14. I wanted to do something special for him. First thought was to take a cruise or to go to flordia to get away from our kids :) but everything with travel is TOO EXPENSIVE!!

So I decided to stay in town. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana. I thought maybe getting a hotel room for 4 days would be a really nice getaway. We are orginially from Chicago so this is still a tourist city to us. I'm looking for any other ideas. Don't want to go over 500.00 but want to get out of the house and far, far, far, (did I say far?) away from kiddos! It doesn't have to be in Indy, but within that 500.00 range.

(If you haven't noticed, I am of course doing this for my hubby, but for me too!!! Just want some him and me time)smile

Any ideas are welcome, I'm getting desperate.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everyone. Just wanted to say thanks so much for all the suggestions! We ended up going to a local hotel, The Hilton, far far far away from our home. It was wonderful! The hotel was great. When the staff knew it was suppose to be a surprise, everybody jumped on board. They provided full breakfast, evening meals, they ungraded our room to the presidental suite, which they had decorated with candles, soft music, and a crackers, cheese,& fruit tray. The even included some sparkling cider with the champaign glasses. It was really romantic. My husband couldn't believe it. We spent a wonderful 4 days there away from our kids....oops, did I say that? tee hee hee.

Thanks again for all the great advice. I'll be counting on you guys for next year!!! :-)

Would he like something active like a water park? You could go stay at the Holiday Inn here in town with the indoor Caribbean Cove park in it. I think it fills up fast though, so I'd call soon if you want to do it!

It says something about two spas on site. Maybe on the weekdays (when there'd be fewer KIDS, ha ha) you could do that stuff, and on the weekend days you could just do Indy.... shows, Circle Center/movies, dining, carriage ride, bars... have fun!

If you're staying in town to do this, I'd say to try to get a hotel room at a nice place downtown. Then go to the Eiteljorg museum, actually go to the monument on monument circle, take a carriage ride, eat dinner at St. Elmo's or something.

If you can swing it - maybe go to someplace a couple hours away like Louisville. Then stay at The Seelbach or The Brown - go to Hillrich and Bradsby (the people who make the bat's), go on a dinner cruise on The Star of Louisville (www.staroflouisville.com), maybe even go to Huber's Winery and Orchard in Starlight Indiana (www.huberwinery.com) and while you're on the north side of the river, go to Schimpff's Confectionary in Jeffersonville (www.schimpffs.com)...the confectionary is pretty well known for their cinnamon red-hots, and modjeska's, but they have a lot of different chocolates to choose from and turtles and a candy-museum where you can watch them make things; They also serve lunch and ice-cream. Also - you can visit Locust Grove (www.locustgrove.org) George Rogers Clark lived there with his sister for a while. You could also go on a cruise on the Belle of Louisville (it's a steamboat) (www.belleoflouisville.org).

For what it's worth - and good luck!!

You can probably try the hotel by Monroe lake in Brown County. They have rooms w/ jacuzzi & fireplace & overall a very romantic relaxing atmosphere. Don't know how long you want to stay but you can call & check into the price. Good luck & hope you both have fun.

I think a night or 2 at a hotel is a great idea. Stay in one of the more posh hotels downtown and play tourist. Go see a movie (circle center mall has a theater) order room service just have lots of fun! and best of all, YOU get to be pampered too!

Here are a couple of ideas.
Spend a few days in Nashville, Ind.
There are fun shops and restaurants and scenery.
Or go to The fancy restored hotel in French Lick, IN for a couple of nights.
Or take the Architectural tour in Columbus IN (just great!) and stay there a couple of nights...(also can shop at the Edinburgh Outlet mall or tour a nearby winery).

Last year my husband and I got a gift certificate for a place called Cabins and Candlelight. I think the website is www.cabinsandcandlelight.com. We haven't been able to use the gift certificate but the website makes it looks very nice and romantic. There are two cabins located about 45 minutes northwest of Indy and you could definitely do a weekend for under $500. We're looking forward to trying it out!

How about a bed & breakfast? There are PLENTY of those in Indiana and surrounding states. If you want "get away".....what about the French Lick or West Baden Hotels? We LOVE it there. West Baden is an incredible historical landmark, too. We love traveling thru the Amish country of Washington, IN. There are cabins, etc on Patoka Lake and a 1000 acre ranch near there where you can rent a cabin and horse back ride year round. AWESOME!

There is a awesome private lake tucked away about an hour south of Indianapolis called Wasatch Lake...the place is wonderful. You can rent cabins and they are all on the water. Very relaxing I highly recommend it. We go there every year its not to far way to travel but when you get there you feel like you are in a different place. They have a website you can look at. Good Luck.
