Mamas,

Our neighbor is having back surgery tomorrow morning. She has a husband and 3 year old, and I am going to make a meal and take it over (I'm thinking shepherd's pie, yum).  So, I dont do this often, and I want to make it easiest for her. Do I

A) make it, bake it, then take it
B) make it, not bake it, take it
C) make it, not bake it, freeze it, take it
D) make it, bake it, freeze it, take it

That's a lot of "-ake" its, haha. What do you do? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I call and schedule it with them.. "I am going to make you dinner tomorrow. What time is good for you?"

"I would like to make a meal for all of you, what day is good for you?"

A - Make, bake, take and wrap to freeze if they choose to. Don't forget to label what it is and when it was made.

Prepare it so it would be easiest for them. Tell the husband he can stick it in the oven to reheat it or stick it right into their freezer.

We should all be blessed with neighbors who care.

I'd go with B and let them decide if they want to freeze it or bake it. I tend to write instructions on the foil/plastic covering the pan so they don't get lost. Oh, and be sure it's a disposable pan.

I would make it, not bake it, and take it. It is really nice of you to do this for them. I am sure they will greatly appreciate it.

I would make it, and then take it over to the Husband and tell him what temperature to cook it at, and for how long. Then it will be fresh and they can cook it whenever they like.

Its very sweet and good of you to do this, I wish I had a neighbor like you!

I'd ask. I love casseroles but no one else in the family does. It would be sad to take a dish of food no one would eat. I also think letting them know "Hey, I'm cooking dinner tonight, what time do you want it there, hot and ready to eat?" is the best way. We do Phantom Families at Halloween through our ladies group at church and I always liked knowing if my phantom was bringing dinner, and sort of what it was so I'd know if I needed to cook something different. Also, if I had something ready to go in the crock pot I could wait until the next day.

How about you talk to your neighbor and say..."Dinner is on me tonight! I know you have a lot on your plate(no pun intended) and I want to bring you dinner." That way she can plan ahead to have dinner by a certain time. Or she might say it would be more helpful to put it in the freezer for a day that she is frazzled.

You are so kind and a wonderful neighbor. I had friends and neighbors do this for me when I lost our baby at 5 months gestation..my husband and I were so sad along with our 3 kids. I had no strength or energy. It was so wonderful to feel their love through their yummy meals. I got freezer meals and friends call ahead to say they were bringing over dinner. I appreciated it all.

Good luck and best wishes!

I love how you wrote this. Sign of an organized mind! :)

I say, since the surgery is tomorrow, make, bake & take.
He can always refrigerate for later.
Especially, in case, he won't have time to freeze/bake.
You can always make a 2nd dish to freeze/have him bake later for a meal
a few days later when she will most likely still be laid up.

Very sweet of you!

I do this for our church. I make it, not bake it. I wrap in foil and write on it the temp and how long to bake. Then they can bake at their convenience.
Another really easy recipe is French Bread Pizza.
Half a loaf, spread with canned pizza sauce, load up with lunch meats or any kind of meat, top with cheese on each half. Wrap each half seperately, write 375 for 25 min. Enjoy.
You are a good neighbor!
Blessings

Option B- that way they can bake it when they are ready to eat it. Make sure to include a little note on "how to" reheat! Sheperd's Pie is DELICIOUS, but if you freeze it, it takes forever to defrost with those mashed potatoes. Better to leave it up to them!

Make, bake, and take. That way, all they have to do is reheat. If they don't want to have it right away, they can freeze it.

I like to deliver meals fully prepared, while still hot if possible. Then the recipient can decide what to do with it: eat it right away, refrigerate for later, or freeze for even later. What a lucky neighbor!

i say make and take with instructions, she may be eating a favorite last meal before not ebing able to eat until the surgery, and it may be planned out already, also you dont know when they'll be getting home. If you ask first you're likely to get some resistance and her saying "noooo its really ok, thank you" a lot of people feel like saying yes is asking for help. If it were M. I'd say thank you but you dont have to do that, so I vote B with not letting them know....maybe some fresh hot desert though if you like baking

I would make it, wrap it such that it can be frozen (double wrap, ziploc, etc.) and take it with instructions (including "remove wrap" if necessary) then take it. Totally foolproof it for her husband who may be a little overwhelmed handling everything and a sick wife. And, if it's wrapped for the freezer already, he can choose to bake it or throw it right in the freezer (in case others have brought food and they have too much). You are a good neighbor - my neighbors suck. LOL!
