OK, this is pretty gross, I must admit, but my dog decided to urinate in my bag, which contained my purse and some other important items. The smell was HORRENDOUS. I love my purse (& my fabric checkbook), which I already soaked in soapy water -but the smell is still unbearable. Does anyone have any suggestions of a non-bleaching agent (my purse is black fabric) that might take the smell away?
Hi D.,
I have found that what really works to get the stain out without removing color is plain old soda water. Carbonated water with sodium has worked best for my carpet and it doesn't leave a soapy residue which attracts new stains. Good luck to you!

Try Borax. Officaly called 20 Mule Team Borax. Available at most grocery stores. It's so great for deodorizing and cleaning; it has many, many uses and I use it for everything.
Good Luck!

Febreeze odor neutralizer works great- who knows how, it's probably totally toxic but I've had great results with it. You might also call a cleaners to see if this is something they could handle. Good luck!

My puppy had the habit of making my home office her "getaway" and it was bad! (Especially if the windows were closed!) Then I read about Folex for taking out the smell. I cleaned the carpet using it and it works! Maybe you could soak you bag in this (no bleach in it). Also, if you go to the pet store you might find this 6"x6" bag of "stones" that remove pet smells in a room. It cost about $8.00 and I have one in my office ~ and of all places ~ one in my teenage son's room. (Gross, huh?)Anyway, it soaks up any unfavorable smell and it is in a really sturdy plastic case. Let me know if you want the Brand, name, etc. I will get it for you.

Since my animals are lately having a pee-war, allow me...
First, Petzyme. I got mine at Petsmart. You put it on, let it soak in for ten minutes, wipe. I imagine you could soak the fabric in it if necessary. THEN, baking soda. Put it on with some water (almost, but not quite a paste, leave it on, wash your stuff later.
This has saved my rug, my purse, my couch, AND my mattress...AND my pets' lives, I may add.

HI D.~
Congratulations by the way on keeping your head up on such a touchy subject- urine YUK!!! I feel for you... but out of all the chemicals suggested here- I am suggesting before you go out and spend lots of money on different products, and see if they do or don't work- and probably damage or ruin the color of your wallet/purse/checkbook- purchase a whole new purse/bag/checkbook. You will keep your sanity, keep your animal happy and go on with your life with less of a headache. Pick your battles, and see if this is something that can reduce the stress. Just a thought. Take care..
I have a cat who became incontinent and our local pet store suggested I try this. I know, it has a funny name, but it works! Good luck.

Hi, D.~
I have had amazing success with natural products that I've purchased from Melaleuca. They have a great stain and odor remover called Sol-U-Mel that works wonders on ANYTHING including pet stains. The thing that I like the best is that the product itself is non caustic, so I have no concerns about the ingredients (green soap and melaleuca oil are the main ones). If you're interested in learning more about their products, let me know!
Nature's Miracle will work. I have used it with total success on urine smells-including the most foul of all, male cat markings...available in lots of places including online and pet stores...it works, and it is a miracle! (I don't think it is toxic at all either.)

I'm not sure if anyone has suggested this yet, but soak and then wash in Nature's Miracle, that you can get at a pet store. Works all the time! I soak for about 15 minutes, and then wash. We also use it for when my son has nighttime accidents.

Not sure about the purse, etc., but when we had a dog that would get excited and urinate on the carpet, I always used white vinegar. It doesn't discolor fabric, and seems to be the best for getting that odor out. It might take more than one application, but should do the trick.

I haven't had this problem with a dog, but have with many cats who would urinate on anything we left on the ground. My mom used to wash our clothes in the washing machine and she would add pine sol to get the cat urine out. It worked GREAT! Depending on how bad it was, once in awhile she'd have to wash it twice but usually once did the trick. I'm sure it would do the same with dog urine. Good Luck!

Go to a pet supply store and talk to one of the clerks. A smaller, family-owned store would be more apt to have knowledgeable personnel. I got an oxidizing agent at a local (Roseville) pet supply store that got the cat urine smell out of my carpet. Since the oxidizing process takes some time, the smell won't go away over night, but it will eventually go away. The spray did not hurt my carpet.

Go to a pet store and buy an enzyme to remove the pet smell. The enzymes are live, and actually eat the bacteria that is causing the smell. You can purchase it by the gallon (Petzyme) at places like Petsmart. Do not dilute it! Use it full strength, let it sit on the stained area for about 15 minutes, then rinse with clear water. Repeat as many times as you need to!
On another note... why do you think your dog did this? What has changed in your/his life? Dogs don't usually start to go in new places, especially personal ones without a reason. Check with your vet, sometimes they have urinary tract infections which makes them go in strange places. Your vet should have a suggestion, whether cause is physical or behavioral! Good luck!

Hi D.,
I just wanted to recommend a product I use and it seems to work on everything...Proklean. Their website is:
www.genuineproklean.com
They have a specific product for pet urine along with reviews. I use mine to clean up spills on all carpeting because it never discolors the fabrics and gets the stain up fast. Smells clean too.
The friends that have used the urine product said it got the stain and smell out and oddly enough the cat did not return to that particular spot to do business ever again...
Good luck...

Hi D.,
Have you tried Fabreze? I'm thinking it might be the product we used to get rid of the cat spray that was in our house when we moved in. There is an enzyme in the urine that needs to be broken down. You might want to call a cleaning supply company and ask what they would recommend. What a BUMMER by the way!!!What was your dog thinking????
Sending a prayer for blessings (physical strength, emotional delight, wisdom, peace, and financial provision)your way.

We use "Simple Solution Stain and Odor Remover" which is enzyme-based and purchased at the pet store. We generally only need it for our carpets but it has worked like a charm. Takes the odor out so a pet won't do his business in the same spot again. The directions say you can use it on other items as well. Good luck!

Hi D., while I have never dealt with dog urine, I have had many occasions with cat urine. Since your purse is fabric, have you tried putting it in a pillow case and washing in your washing machine? The other thing you can do is go to your local pet store. They sell some stuff called Nature's Miracle. You can get it in spray form, and it usually takes the odor out. It may take a couple of times, but it has worked for me before with my cats. Good Luck

Hi Dabbie,
To remove pet urine smell (I have both cats and dogs) use a product with an enzyme. If the label doesn't say "enzyme" on it then it's not in the product. I have found Shout to be a wonder cleaner in this area. Put your items in a sink with hot water and 1/2 to one full bottle of Shout. Let them soak for a day and a night. If you can, laundry them in the delicate cycle. If you aren't comfortable with the washer, then just rinse really, really well.
You are someone to be admired. There should be a monument to single parents in our nation's capital.
God bless,
L.

There is a product out called "Natures Miracle" that we got at a pet store. When I got married and moved in with my husband my cat decided that peeing all over the office was a good thing. To make a long story short we had to remove the carpet and everything! We tried Nature's Miracle and white vinegar as well. It did help. I think maybe in your case one or both may work since it's a smaller area, but I am not sure if either of those would do anything to your purse color etc. It didn't do anything to the carpet, so it's worth a shot! Good luck and let us know how it turns out! Jen

I've worked in a veterinary clinic for many years, and let me tell you; Things like Febreeze will only mask the smell. You need something that will actually break down the enzymes. Don't use vinegar, oddly enough the enzymes in vinegar are similar to urine. If you go to the pet store, they will have spray there. I've also used a specialized carpet shampoo that way just for pet stains and smells. The key here, remember, is to break down the enzymes. Anything else will only mask the smell and not get rid of it!
