How to Refresh My Haircolor

Hi ladies:)
I colored my hair at home about 4 weeks ago and I am starting to see just a little bit of my natural color at the roots. I am going to be in a wedding March 14th so I am planning on redoing the color at the end of Feb. Have any of you done your roots only after coloring, if so how do I do it successfully? Do the roots which will be somewhat brighter clash with the rest of my hair that has settled into the color? I went a couple shades blonder, so it was pretty bright for a week or so. Or, is it better to just redo the color all over my hair so it will all match? Thanks!

I used to be a hairdresser and own my own shop. What you do is put the color on the roots, leave it on there for 20 minutes, put color on the rest and comb it thru leave it on the whole head for an addtional 10 minutes. It should blend nicely.

I do my hair color at home too, but I use the none permanent die. It washes out in 28 washes, and I wash my hair every other day so I go about two months. I love using the none permanent one because it doesn't damage your hair the roots and not as noticiable (as roots that is)becuase the color as whole starts to wash out...so it's never two toned. I like like that it is only about $8 at Walgreens, Walmart has it cheaper (but I hate going to walmart for just one item). I buy a few at a time because I use a brunette color that is sometimes sold out. So go buy a few bottles of the color of your choice and keep them on hand, and when you the color start to fade, use another one. They don't damage your hair and they come with a great conditioner inside. Try it, you still have some time!

Usually if you're touching up the roots, the directions will tell you to apply to the new growth of hair first, wait about 15 minutes then apply to the rest of the hair. It will tell you for sure in the directions, that way there's not such a contrast in the color.

I used to color my own hair all the time. The directions should tell you to apply to roots first and leave it anywhere from 10-20 minutes depending on the product, and then apply to the rest of your hair & leave for another 10 min or so. The directions should tell you for sure.

A couple of brands also have root touch-up kits now too. I haven't ever used those, though. I tend to change my color a lot, so I do all-over usually.

J.,
This is what I do and it also saves money. I would not do all of your hair, I would only do the roots. If you color all of your hair too often it will fry it. Go to Sally's Beauty supply and get a plastic color applicator bottle for less than $1. With your box of color, mix half of the color developer and half of the color into your bottle from Sally's and only do the roots. It should not clash with the rest of your hair. I do it all the time. You will have the other half for when you need to do your roots again. When you need to refresh your color and do all of your hair which should only be about every 2 to 3 months then of course you might need to use the whole box depending on how long your hair is.

I hope this helps, Good Luck

I always tried to color just the roots of my hair when I did it myself. But, I always ended up doing the whole head because I never could get it just on the roots, especially in the back. So, I gave up and started going to a salon. I don't do any other pampering things like that for myself, so I figured I could justify it for that. I don't do highlights, just coloring.

If you must do it yourself, have a friend come over and put it in your hair for you. That way, they will have better sight and control to keep it just on the roots. Let it sit, say 30 minutes.

Then, have your friend "pull" the color through the rest of your hair and let that sit for about 10-15 more minutes. "Pull through" will have her take her fingers starting at the roots and squeeze the color onto the rest of your hair.

My beautician does this for me and it evens out the brightness of the new color, plus it makes the rest of my hair look like it is highlighted.

I agree with Sherry's advice. I ALWAYS color just my roots and never have an issue with multi-colored hair. I went to Sally's and purchased the plastic dish and applicator brush because it's easier to apply instead of using the bottle tip. My hairstylist says you don't want to apply color throughout everytime because it will eventually dry out your hair. Since my hair grows pretty fast, I color every 4-5 wks. Think about everytime you go to the salon and see someone getting their roots done, you only see their roots with color and not the rest. He also said to apply the color to the ends every 3rd time since the color there fades. Apparently it works since I get my hair trimmed about every 4 months or so and he says I have healthy hair.

You can get root touch up kits and do just the roots, and then later before the wedding if the color is dull then go with a full color.
