Good Morning K.

My eldest son got picked to go to France for 6 weeks 2 years ago and had to raise $6,000. He sent letters to businesses, our Church, other Churches, etc. We also had a spaghetti dinner (charged only $5.00 per person), and we had a candle sale with Gold Canyon Candles. We also asked family members for donations. He sent donation letters to baseball/football teams also. I couldn't believe how many of these places donated! We did end up getting enough donations from everyone and he really had a great time!

Good Luck
God's Blessings

K.,
This is a great oppourtunity for your son. My brother has lived in Japan for over 16 years and he loves it (miltary). A fellow at my job went to sams club and purchased candy bars and sold them at work. He made enough money to sponsor the trip (8th grade to DC) for himself and his son with spending money. Although it is a little tedious, it served its purpose. But yu son can also shovel snow etc.. many ways to reach the goal. Good LUck

I had the same opportunity to go to Japan in high school again it cost about $5000. I wrote to local businesses asking for support, I also has a part time job, and I also received some money from my school as part of a scholarship fund. I was very proactive and sent hundreds of letters out, i did get a lot of rejections, but i was able to raise $4000 of the $5000 needed.

It is an opportunity that changed my life, and I would encourage your son to write as many letters as possible to the local community.

Congrats to your son! I had much the same situation. When my daughter was a junior in high school she was invited to play on a national volleyball team in Hawaii. She really wanted to go and it was a great opportunity. It was about $4000 as well. So here's what she did. She made up note cards that said (paraphrasing as its been several years). "You have supported me from the bleachers and now I need you to support me from your wallets, if you are able". She went on to tell the story of the volleyball opportunity and asked for sponsors. She sent them to all of her family members and friends along with a picture of herself with a volleyball. SHe got enough money to go to hawaii and then when she returned she sent them all a thank you note with her teams record and a picture of herself with a volleyball wearing a lei. The family and friends were honored to have helped. Some sent $100 but most sent $50. It was awesome!

Good luck to you and your son.

Your 16 year old son could do any of the following to raise money for his trip:
- mow lawns
- pull weeds
- rake leaves
- trim bushes
- walk dogs
- pooper scooper work
- babysit for neighbors/friends
- clean cars
- wash windows
- clean houses
- clean/organize garages
- get a part time job at a restaurant
- get a part time job at a grocery store
- community service for your church and ask for in-kind donations in return
- tutor younger or other students for $10/hour, especially since he's an honor roll student

MANY, MANY, MANY opportunities for your son to work and earn money for his trip. You could help, but he should be doing most of the work to earn this opportunity. Later in life he will really appreciate what it took to get him there.

Just to piggy back on what the moms have said. I would suggest that you see if the checks or money orders can be made to whom ever is heading up the trip so people can know that the money is going for his trip. We rasied money for my neice to take a trip with the church and there was an option for people to pay the church directly and put her name in the memo line.
