My sister in law is coming to visit us for 10 days and bringing her 1 year old and 4 year odl.. I have a 2 year odl and 3 year old...

My kids take naps... and go to bed by 8 pm every night.

Her kids nap sometimes... and go to bed whenever... Her kids are often cranky and miserable...

I really want to ask her to please put the 1 year old down for a nap when my 2 kids go down... so that we will get a break.

Does anyone have any suggestions for talking to her?

What can I do next?

lisa; you can oncey ou put your kids down, take the one year old and read to them and hold them and work with the one year old yourself, i dont think i would address it directily or maybe aske do you have thme take naps, ? i know my kids feel soo much better when they do, and i get tog et some stuff done, or meanwhile while your kids are sleeping just spend more time with the nephews and neices, dont be pushy, and she is the one that has to live with them cranky, maybe too she dont have to fight for them to go to sleep at night as much , idont know , and we cant second guess, we can just offer, and be there when they need us, hang in there, and keep it positive, how would you want her to tell you ? what would you respond to ? treat others how you want to be treated, in that situation, just enjoy the kids and have fun, you can work on tiring them out too, if not you turn out to be a great aunt, ahahah D. s

I would just try to keep to the schedule that you have and hope she follows your lead and see what happens. Her kids might just fall right in with yours. This is supposed to be a fun visit, not a battle of the wills. They all might surprise you.

I think I would kinda just say something like this "It will be nice to have some adult conversation and quiet time when the little ones go down during the afternoon. Hopefully your little one will nap while mine are napping. Then you could suggest the 4 yr. old have a little quiet time too by watching a show and chillin on the couch quietly while the little ones are napping. I'm thinking her 1 yr. old will need to nap during the day. I don't know many that can stay up all day long at that age. Good luck.

You could say (casually and warmly), "Hey, do you want to put your little one down, too? Then we could have a bit of break to chat." And have the area all set up. And then if she mentions she's having problems with her kids sleeping or something, you could say (casually and warmly), "Oh, I have a book on that that really helped me out! You should totally borrow it." And hand her the book.
I am right there with you on the naps and kids in bed by 8pm!
Good luck.

realize tho that if her kids nap when yours do, there might be disturbance. What I mean is that if she tries to adhere to your request and all the kids are put in the same room, this would be a new thing for her kids, and they might not cooperate, thusly keeping your kids awake. Then you've both got cranky and miserable kids.

Good luck.

I would suggest asking her to have her kids play outside during nap time - just explain that your kids are miserable if they don't have naps and gently say that your kids will have trouble napping if they konw their cousins are up and about. Hopefully she'll suggest that hers take naps too? I would do the same with bed time- let her know that if your kids aren't in bed by their normal time, they're really thrown off the next day...
