How to Keep Squirrels from Digging up Spring Flower Bulbs?

We are getting ready to plant a bunch of spring flower bulbs. However, we are worried that our planned spring flower garden will turn into a wintertime-squirrel-buffet. Seriously, we have TONS of squirrels, especially since our dog passed away and is not guarding the yard anymore. I have heard sprinkling cayenne pepper in the area will keep them away, any other suggestions? Is there some sort of garden netting or mesh we can tack down to keep the pests away? I am open to options. Thanks!

Oh squirrels... They are a real problem. You can try moth balls, which stink terribly or things like types of dried blood and urine (fox or wolf, something like that) found on line but they wash away. There are packets of the stuff you can hang around but I wouldn't want my kids getting a hold of them. Good luck.

Here's what you do:plant the bulbs as usual then cover the entire flower bed with a couple of inches of peat moss. Then cover the bed with chicken wire - just lay it flat over the peat moss and anchor it with bricks or stones. This is what we have done for the past several years and it works. Just know that your flowers will bloom slightly later than others b/c the earth will warm up a little slower with all that insulation. Good luck! PS In the spring you need to take the wire off when the snow melts.

Sometimes the pepper does work. I want to hear the rest. I lost a lot of tulips last year.
