My 4 yr old son is starting swim lessons and the chlorine at the pool is so strong. Does anyone recommend a shampoo that helps keep his hair from getting too damaged?

What can I do next?

We get swimmers shampoo. It is made by Circle of Friends. We order it on line, much cheaper. The chlorine was also killing my daughters hair. This is the only product that worked for us. They also sell a spray to spray on hair before swimming. I recommend that as well.

Saturate hair with non-chlorinated water before getting in the pool. If hair is already wet (saturated), then it cannot absorb any more water, so the chlorine cannot discolor it. Think of it like a sponge: it can only soak up so much. You might try to find a swimmers cap that fits also. If his hair is completely covered, it won't get damaged. HTH! :)

Have him take take a shower and soak his hair BEFORE he gets in the pool. Don't dry it, just let it be soaking wet. Saturating his hair with clean water, will prevent it from soaking up so much chlorinated water.

Always have him take a shower after swimming and wash his hair.
Use a clarifying shampoo and conditioner.
YMMV

I'm a stylist, and one thing you can do is saturate his hair with (non pool) clean water and spray on a leave in conditioner prior to him getting in the pool. The hair won't absorb as much chlorine because it will be full of the un-chlorinated water and conditioner.

If you want a really great shampoo specifically for swimmers, you can find plenty online, many of them have reviews as well:

I run a daycare so during the summer to keep my 6 children plus my 7 daycare children from going insane (Or drving me to insanity) We go swimming almost every day. I bought a GOOD clarifying shampoo from a beauty supply store (Can't remember the brand right now, but will look in the AM) We makesure to do the whole rinse hair with cool water (same temp as the pool if not a tad bit warmer) before entering the pool. Not only to help prevent the swimmers hair but rinses out hair products that build up in the pool. Then I wash everybodys hair with the shampoo & a garden hose after, LoL. Also there's a swimmers conditioner but my friend who does pools says that's a bad idea because it makes the pool that much harder to maintain.
This year I'm doing the swimmers cap thing that I see them wear on swim teams. That will def save from the aweful swimmers hair & (& save me from buying shampoo every week) I bet there will be atleast one other kid if not more in your sons class that will be wearing one!!

One thing you can do is have him shower before getting in the pool. My doctor says it makes a great difference entering in the pool already wet. Can't explain it chemically but it helps reduce this.

You can help to prevent swimmer's ear by being sure that his ears are dry after he gets out of the water. Tip his head to the side as well as dry the outer ear. I've heard of putting a drop or two of rubbing alcohol into the ear but haven't tried that.

I've been very happy with Malibu Swimmers Action shampoo and conditioner. I use it on both my daughters' hair, especially in the summer when they're in the water a lot.
