This might be a little silly but whenever I heat up spagetti sauce in the microwave it always splatters everywhere even when its not hot yet. I usually heat it in the bowl that I plan to put the cooked pasta into. I heard plastic wrap causes cancer when it gets heated up so that is out unless there is one that isn't carcinogenic. I have used paper towels but they fall in, should I use a bigger piece? How do you moms heat up sauce so it doesn't splatter? Thanks!
The reason I don't use a pot on the stove is because it is usually for one person and I don't want to wash another pan.
Thanks for the great ideas!! I am an excellent cook and felt pretty dumb asking this!

I set a small plate on top of the bowl upside down. It gets hot and holds in some steam so you have to be careful when you take it out. If you can put the plate on upside down then you have a nice warm plate for garlic bread to go with the spaghetti and the sauce didnt get on the bottom of the plate.

I think you may have been mis-informed about the plastic wrap. However, if you make great gravy, I would just put it on the stove, heat it up slowly, and wash the extra pan and enjoy. Who ever the ONE person is, especially if it is YOU, aren't you worth it?
Blessings......

I use a plastic or glass lid that is larger than the bowl I'm using, so it just sits on top of the bowl and blocks splatters. An upside-down plate works just as well.

the simplest way to heat up spaghetti sauce is to heat it in a pan with a lid...
if you HAVE to use a microwave - use the lowest setting and then put the lid on the dish - at an ANGLE so the steam can still escape...

I put a glass top or a plate over the top of the bowl.
A paper plate or a paper towel works too.

You are right not to use any type of plastic unless it says it is safe! From the Harvard Medical School Family Guide:
Here are some things to keep in mind when using the microwave:
Most takeout containers, water bottles, and plastic tubs or jars made to hold margarine, yogurt, whipped topping, and foods such as cream cheese, mayonnaise, and mustard are not microwave-safe.
Microwavable takeout dinner trays are formulated for one-time use only and will say so on the package.
Don’t microwave plastic storage bags or plastic bags from the grocery store.
Before microwaving food, be sure to vent the container: Leave the lid ajar, or lift the edge of the cover.
Don’t allow plastic wrap to touch food during microwaving because it may melt. Wax paper, kitchen parchment paper, or white paper towels are alternatives.
If you’re concerned about plastic wraps or containers in the microwave, transfer food to glass or ceramic containers labeled for microwave oven use.
Remember, only those containers labeled “microwave safe” have been tested and found safe for that purpose. A container that’s not labeled safe for microwave use isn’t necessarily unsafe; the FDA simply hasn’t determined whether it is or not.
What I personally do, just take a small plate and place on top of the bowl. End of concerns... =)

You should always put something over the bowl of 'splatter prone' foods so they have less chance of splattering or shooting out of the bowl. Use a paper towel or a microwave save lid & just set the lid on top a little cocked open so it can vent & proceed as normal. Just keep in mind that a lot of the times, the papertowel usually falls off in my microwave so if that's all I have at the time to use, i try to tuck it under the bowl to try & keep it on. Hope this helps, good luck.

I use a glass Pyrex bowl.
I put a paper towel over the bowl.
I put it in the microwave on 'reheat.'
I stir it, as it heats, so that is heats evenly.
Once it is hot enough for my preference, it is done.
My paper towels do not fall in.
I make the paper towel large enough to fit and overlap the bowl rim.

I use the stove. I turn it on medium until its softly boiling. Then I pour out the sauce and rinse out the pot so that it's easy to clean. It might actually be easier to clean than a splattered microwave. If you're wanting to use the microwave still, you can place a dish (even just an upside down plate) on the top of the bowl and try it that way.

Try heating it up more slowly - maybe 50% power for a few minutes, then stir - repeat until hot.
I also put a ceramic plate on top of things heating in the micro to prevent splatters.
Pasta - yummy

My saran wrap says "microwave safe". I just cover the bowl and fold back one corner just a bit to allow steam to escape. I don't heat things in plastic bowls but I do cover glass or pyrex with saran wrap.

I'm a big fan of Alton Brown and he actually did a show where he talked about heating something in a jar. Since the jar is wider than the opening the sauce will super heat in certain areas and boil causing the splatter. The best way to avoid this is putting the sauce in a different container. Not what you wanted to hear since you wanted to keep from using multiple dishes. My parents used to heat spaghetti sauce in the microwave and just cleaned up afterwards.

I do what my grandma did. I take some celery and/onion and garlic and saute it with some extra herbs and then stir in the spaghetti sauce in to warm up. I also take a splash or two of the noodle water as I've heard it helps the pasta sauce stick to the noodles!

I usually heat it on the stove in a pan with a cover. But if you want to use the microwave try getting a splatter shield. It's a plastic dome like cover you put over the bowl to catch splatters. I got mine as Bed Bath & Beyond. Of course, then you have to wash the cover so you might just as well use the pan on the stove.

I heat it in the bowl I am going to serve it in with the lid on it.
I also have a plastic vented cover that I put over it sometomes too.
The ONLY reason I don't use plastic wrap is that is gets too hot in the microwave. I've never heard of it causing cancer and I don't worry about that.. these days everything you do causes cancer in some way or another.... the media hypes everything up.

I don't heat the spaghetti sauce separately. After I drain the noodles I put them back in the pot and put the sauce in and heat it on low for a few minutes to make sure the sauce is warmed up. You could also use the same pot to heat the sauce after you put the pasta in the bowl. Also, when I heat things in the microwave, I put a regular plate over the bowl as a cover. If it is a small bowl, I use a saucer or dessert plate. However, this still messes up another dish.

I use chinese food containers to re-heat any kind of food, including pasta & sauce. The containers are microwave safe, don't cost you anything, & help control portion size. Put your sauce in, place the lid on top (don't seal it), & put in the microwave. Best thing is, if the container gets stained, & it bothers you, you throw it out (or recycle it). There's plenty more to use. You can also use any other plastic container with a lid. Just look for a number "5" on the bottom of the container in the recycle symbol. These are the safest for microwave use.
