Hi, last year when we bought the house we removed the existing carpet and put laminated floor ourselves. We stored the carpet pieces in our garage and now i am planning to organize my garage but i don't know how to get rid of the carpet. The services who move the carpet they charge. Is it ok to dispose if off in recycle trash? or are there any companies who take it for free? any suggestions?

What can I do next?

But thanks for your suggestions and Beth B i must say i should have sold it for few bucks but at that time i did not realize that it can be sold also. But thats ok i gave it to the needy one and the big thing is its not cluttering my garage anymore. Thanks ladies!

The carpet is not recycable. But, as someone else mentioned, if it's in good condition, you can possibly donate it to the Habitat for Humanity Home Store (they are listed in the phone book - I think off of Grand Ave.). They do pick-ups. Or, most neighborhoods have a bulk trash pick up either monthly or quarterly. Most big items we put out for bulk trash end up getting picked up by someone and hauled away - recycling !

Try Craigs List or Ebay if the carpet is still in some sort of decent shape...you'd be surprised what people will buy, and then you'd get rid of it and make a little extra cash on the side!

The only free option is to wait for you next bulk trash pick up. Just check with your city and then move it to the curb.
You could always cut it up a place it in the trash if you can't wait until the next one. But I don't believe you can recycle it.

If it's in good condition you may also try finding a nonprofit that will take it. There are some organzations that specifically work on taking odds and ends from remodeling projects. And they usually pick up for free.

what kind of condition are they in if in fairly good condition you might want to try to craigslist or even freecycle? if they are in horrible shape maybe you can cut them up in small pieces and dispose of them that way

If the carpet isn't too badly worn or cut up Habitat for Humanity or St. Vincent De Paul would take it. They can cut it up and use a remnants and help needy families.
