Hi Moms,

Help! We have hundreds of mushrooms that have started to grow in the wood chips under our play set in the backyard. The mushrooms are there whether it has rained or not. Has anyone ever had this happen and how did you get rid of the problem?

Thanks for any help.

I would not want the mushrooms either. It is because of all the rain and the wood chips hold the water and spores begin to grow. This kind of mushrooms are poisonous and it's best to get rid of them
We was the last time you replace your woodchips? They should be replace every few years. You might try raking them up, putting down a landscape sheet, then put down a layer of sand followed by new woodchips but you will not need to put as many down if you have the sand.
Landscape sheets can be purchased at Menards, Home depot or even Walmart. The sheet will allow water to drain and allow air circulation while preventing weeds to grow.

You can try spraying the area with vinegar.

Just wanted to add, that we have the black plastic sheeting under our mulch and still have mushrooms all over the place, so that won't help...not sure what to do either except let them dry out! :)

It is due to this bath we have been getting daily. One thing you can do can be a bit of work, but will help in the future as well. Rake up the wood chips and put down black plastic landscape sheeting. You can get this at Menards, Home Depot or Lowe's. Then you would put the wood chips over that. As long as the layer is thick enough, you won't have to worry about the kids slipping on the plastic. I have heard of some people puttin little slits in the plastic to give more drainage, espceially if you have any type of stones or logs around the playset. You could also ask at the store if they have any other item available to give the same result.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it casued by excessive water in the ground underneath in which case we have to get mother nature to stop pouring down on EVERY DAY!!! We have them growing in the grass as well.

I second Leslie's response . . . what's the big deal? Your kids probably think they're cool and are old enough to know not to put them in their mouths. We have them in our backyard right now too . . . just another "gift" from Mother Nature! I wouldn't worry about them; like Leslie said, as soon as the sun dries the area out they'll die.

OK, L., I'm going to come at you with a different poit of view: why are they a problem? They're just mushrooms. They won't hurt anything. As soon as the summer warms up and the chips dry out, the mushrooms will die. Often mushrooms are only seen in spring - due to the moisture - and once summer gets into full swing, they die.

Can you clarify the problem? You might even take them to a local arboretum or post pix of them on a garden chat site - to see if they might be edible. WARNING: do NOT eat any mushroom you have not positively identified or had someone positively identify.
