How to Get Rid of Ants Outside?

We have had problems with ants in our yard for years. Now that we have had our yard landscaped and had a swingset installed for our kids, we are spending more time out there and they are a pain in our butts! I know all the info about how they're good for the lawn because they aerate the soil...blah blah blah. But they are EVERYWHERE! They are on our patio furniture, all over our table, all over the swingset (so much so that my oldest is scared of them and doesn't even want to use it!)... Ideally I'd like to contain them to the yard itself, but since I can't really put up "no trespassing" signs in ant-ese, how do I get rid of them???

FYI: we've tried garlic, boiling water, grits, ant spray and I just sprinkled cinnamon all over everything (we'll see how that's worked when I go out there tomorrow morning). Our methods either don't phase them, or they just relocate to another area - still infringing on our space, though. Please help!!!

What can I do next?

We use the Raid Ant Motels...they're a stick that you push into the ground...this is the only non-commercial grade item that I have found that actually works. What we do is we put them around the things we don't want them on (patio, etc.) and near the ant hills themselves. You push them far enough into the ground that you can mow over it and they say they are weatherproof...we put them in in the Spring and don't get any more ants until the next Spring...they should be available at any store too...we get them at Meijer, Menards, Target, and Home Depot every year...

Borax and sugar water. It's natural, worked great for us, look up the recipe 'cause I can't remember it exactly. Took a bit (like maybe 7-10 days) but it's safe for children/pets. However, we had them inside. It will work the same outside I'd say but outside's outside and bugs live (at least they should lol!) outside. I suppose it'd control them.

We hired a pest control company. $32/month and they have eradicated our ant problem (as well as our spider problem). They used some kind of stuff for the ants where the ants take it back to their nest and it kills the whole nest (they said it's some kind of ant virus). Anyway, within 3 days we didn't find another ant, and we haven't seen one since!

I found a wonderful all-natural non-chemical ant spray at Whole Foods that actually worked. We had ants in our family room and so we sprayed the doorway where we believed they were coming in, and we have not had a single ant since then (it's been over a month). The best part about it is you can use it around kids and pets because it doesn't have any poisons in it. It's main ingredient is clove oil, I believe. It probably isn't strong enough to get the ants out of your yard, but you might be able to spray down your swing set and patio furniture and keep them off of that stuff. I can't remember the name now, which I know isn't much help, but it was the only ant spray that Whole Foods carried, so if you have one near you, you should go look. Good luck.

Terro Ant Baits. That is what the brand is called.

It works real well.
I use it.

You can find it almost anywhere. And they have an outdoor one, that is self-contained and you just stake it into the ground. Its safe.
Ants eat it, take it back to their nest, and it kills the whole colony.

Look it up online....
CVS carries it, Home Depot, Longs, grocery stores, garden stores, anywhere.

It really works.

All the best,
Susan

I remember this from inside, not sure if you want to try outside: borax mixed with sugar. They are attracted to the sweetness but are elminated (oh what a word) by the Borax. They take it back to the nest ? home...and...hopefully it slows down a few.

We had the same problem and because there were so many ants right outside eventually they started coming inside!! I used spray on the visible ant hills and then we used special lawn ant killer (comes in a bag, I think it's mad be Sevin). This worked great, we no longer have nearly as many! Good luck, those little buggers can drive you nuts!!

Exterminator. They can use a non-toxic bait for ants (not harmful to pets or kids!) that ants gather and take back to the nest and then eat and die.

You need to hire pest people! Fire ants are huge down here in NC, and if you have them in your yard, good luck getting rid of them on your own. Ask around for a reputable company, and good luck! I can't stand ants either!

Try whole cloves. Sprinkle them around wherever you see the ants in the house and outside the house. It has worked for me.
