Hi Moms,

As a recent mom, I am having the most difficult time getting my 7mnth old to drink anything from a bottle or besides breast milk. I didn't have this problem with my oldest child years ago. I practically weined her at 4-6 months and was using sippy cup by her 5th month. Idk what's up with my newest baby she only drinks breast milk, no juices at all, and little sips of water. When I was pregnant I was limited to ALL foods (it seemed like) she would only allow me to eat cereal. Now here's the thing she's eating her solids I just can't get her to drink anything else no matter if I dilute or take nipple off bottle, sippy cups etc etc. I am afraid she may get dehydrated. Any ideas would help....thanks moms!

What can I do next?

Hi--
At this age the only fluid she needs is breast milk. Juice is actually bad for her--just a bunch of empty calories. If she's taking a little water then continue with that, but she should be getting everything she needs from the breast milk. So really, you don't need any help. Everything is just fine.

Mine went thru that not that long ago. He would only front breast milk from the Nuby 3stage grow with me training cup using the SIPPY spouts that come with the set. We could let him have water out of a water bottle of course we held it tipped it up and everything, he never took to any other sippies except the Dr.Browns short one with a flat spout, its really just big enough for a hole. The training spouts are the silicone where he would press and suck "vari flow" no drippy spout and the Dr.Browns he has to suck to get anything out. That being said he didn't really start drinking anything other than BM until a month or 2 ago, he got sick and I watered down some pedialite and cuz there was evidence of the beginning stages of dehydration even when he wasn't sick his doc said we could continue to do that until he started drinking water. I kept adding water to the pedialite until it was nothing but water and now don't have any problems with water, haven't tried juice lately. O and he is so picky he will only take "his milk" from the Nuby and the other fluids from the other sippies its annoying, we haven't tried any other sippies in a few months cuz of the fight we had in the past I figure y bother it its working. Good luck to you.

Skip the bottle and offer a plastic cup. 6 month olds quickly learn how to drink out of cup.

My kids never drank anything besides breastmilk till they were about 9 months or older. And then I only offered water.

I think that your daughter is still needing to suck and not ready this young for a sippy cup or other beverages. You need to stick to formula or breast milk for awhile, until one year old. I think the milk is more important than even a lot of food at this age. She can't just drink out of a bottle without the nipple either. Please don't compare your children with each other. Children are so different and can't be compared really. I think she is right on target and it's very unusual for a child to be weaned at 4-6 months old and drinking from a sippy cup and actually I would think it would not be good for them.

You should not be giving her much, if any, juice. She only drinks breastmilk because that is what she needs, juice and water are OK in small amounts, but you should not try to use them as a replacement for breastmilk. Give her as much breastmilk as she wants,as long as you are not forcing her to have it when she doesn't want it, she will not overeat on breastmilk. Solid foods are more of a novelty and she is not really able to get the nutrition that she needs from solid foods yet. If you can just persevere with breastfeeding/pumping for a few more months it will really have a positive impact on your baby's health and nutrition! When she is 1 she can have cow's milk so just hang in there! Good luck.

Keep in mind that all babies are different, even in the same family, it's best not to compare them, just allow your younger daughter to do her own thing. Let her take breast milk just from a bottle, if you want to stop nursing switch her to formula, at least until she is 1 year.

She needs the nutrients from breastmilk or formula far more than solid food at this time, so offer BM or formula BEFORE her solids each time. The sippy will come in time, keep it around with some water in it in case she wants to try it, but keep to the bottle for now to make sure she gets the nutrition she needs.

At under a year of age, most pediatricians recommend sticking to breast milk or formula. Feeding juices and water can lead to electolyte imbalences in babies this young. Your baby is smart!! She is choosing the healthiest way for a baby to stay hydrated!!

Oh, and per my pediatrician's recommendations, my preschooler still does not drink juice (she drinks 2% milk and water) as most doctors agree that juice is basically just sugar water and not much healthier than soda unless you are making your own, and even then whole fruit is better.
