WE have a house which is 34 years old..kitchen floor is made of tiles.Grout is dirty, nearly black in color in some areas,i want to clean it.I need suggestions how to clean it without using very strong chemicals.i had allergies on my arms last year after using all those cleaners as i cleaned the house like crazy after we moved in:))
another suggestion is needed to make the house more pleasantly smelling,in summers i usually keep the windows open if its not too hot and airconditioning is off to keep the proper airventilation, and if u use candles it smells good but i need something for linen closet,walk-in closets to keep the things fresh smelling..
i know there are plenty of products available in the stores but how many u can try..i used some of them but u have to get refills frequently.pls suggest something which is long lasting.
Another suggestion needed for my patio glass door..Right now we don't have budget to change it and it has become quite opaque at one side,u can't see thru it...its kind of frosty..pls suggest something to make it beautiful till we plan to change it.i have sheer curtains on my patio door b'cos i love to keep the house bright(full of light) during daytime:))
Did i ask too much??I know u guys are great and going to help me ...
Thanks
Take care
F.

I just got this sent to me today from another group I am in. Maybe you will find something useful there that will work.

Easy Recipes for General Cleaning and Getting Rid of Pests
© Leslie Sausage

1. All-Purpose Cleaner #1

1 qt hot water
2 T washing soda

Mix well; wash surface; rinse.

2. All-Purpose Cleaner #2

Soapy ammonia is a versatile cleaning agent. You can use it in place of a commercial all-purpose cleaner for everyday kitchen and bathroom cleaning. Dilute according to the instructions on the container.

3. Glass Cleaner #1

To a 1-quart spray bottle, add:

1-2 T sudsy ammonia
1/2 C rubbing alcohol

Fill with water to make 1-quart of class cleaner.

4. Glass Cleaner #2

To a 1-quart spray bottle, add:

2 Tb white vinegar
Tiny squirt (1/16 tsp) liquid dish detergent

Fill with water to make 1-quart of class cleaner.

Apply with cloth or mist/spray bottle; dry with lint-free cloth or paper towels.

Window-cleaning tip: Wash windows on a cloudy day or when the windows are in shade because direct sunlight can cause streaking.

Optional: Add a drop or two of blue food color and/or use a permanent marker to write the recipe directly on the bottle; for safety (to know what's in the bottle) and also so you have the recipe handy when it's time for a refill

5. Laundry Pre-Soak for Stains

1/2 C Wisk (liquid laundry detergent)
1/2 C ammonia (sudsy or scented)
1/2 C white vinegar
1/2 C water

Great for getting out food stains! I've used other laundry detergents, just make sure NOT to use any that have bleach in them.

6. Removing Blood from Fabric

Pour hydrogen peroxide onto fabric immediately, let bubble up, then rinse with cold water; wash as usual.

Reminder: NEVER mix bleach and ammonia!

7. Sealed-Wood Cleaner and Floor Polish

2 tsp light olive oil
1 C distilled white vinegar

Pour the oil and vinegar into a 1-quart spray bottle. Blend well. Spray the cleaner onto wood, wipe over with a damp cloth, and finish drying with a clean, lint-free cloth.

8. Silver Cleaner

1 piece aluminum foil (big enough to cover the bottom of the cleaning container)
1 to 2 Tb baking soda
2 qt very hot water

Lay the aluminum foil along the bottom of a plastic or glass container. Place the tarnished silver on top. Sprinkle the silver with baking soda, and cover it with very hot water.
Soak until bubbles stop, then rinse and polish the silver with a soft cloth.

How this works: silver sulfide (tarnish) breaks down and transfers to the aluminum foil, which you can then throw out. The result: shiny silver.

Since this technique removes tarnish uniformly, you shouldn't use it with antique or intricately patterned silver.

9. Toilet Bowl Cleaner

1/2 C borax
Scrub bowl with borax and a brush.

10. Clogged Drain

For clogged drains, plug overflow drain with wet cloth; pour 1/4 cup baking soda into drain followed by 1/2 cup vinegar; close drain tightly until fizzing action stops; flush with boiling water. Remove cloth from overflow drain.

11. Ants

Wash the area of the ant's trail to prevent others from following; sprinkle boric acid (obtained in hardware stores) along the line of entry.

12. Fleas

To prevent flea infestations, feed pet tablet of brewers yeast and garlic. Bathe dogs regularly during flea season and use a flea comb on your cat or dog. Vacuum furniture and carpet thoroughly and frequently (store vacuum outside of home - in shed or garage, for instance - during problem periods); clean your pet's favorite sleeping spots regularly and sprinkle with fennel or rosemary.

13. Moths

To prevent moths from feasting on your clothing and woolens, keep them clean and store in a cedar chest. Or place sachets made of cedar chips or lavender in your closets.

14. Roaches

Set out a dish containing equal parts sugar and baking soda (the sugar attracts and the baking soda eliminates).

With all these recipes, use appropriate safety precautions!

Good luck!

I agree with everyone else. Try mr. clean magic eraser for the grout. I used it in my old home and the grout looked like new. Only problem, you may have to buy a couple of boxes and clean it twice.

Good luck.

This is going to sound weird but it really works, I did it in my kitchen and my grout came up like new. Shaving Cream.....Yes shaving cream. Not Gel either foam. REgular foam shaving cream. Squirt it on to the grout, let sit a couple of minutes, scrub with a brush (toothbrush since you are concentrating on the grout), then mop away with clean water. Only do a small section of the floor at a time or when you go to clean it with the mop is will be a bigger hassel to get up. If you bucket of water gets grimmy make sure to change the water to do the next section. This may take a little longer and sound more involved, but it is cheap inexpensive and not a harsh way to clean the grout. If it is white grout you can use a bleach pen, again doing small sections of a time apply the bleach pen then rinse with clean water. Good Luck

When we moved into our house the grout was black and I tried everything. Magic eraser works fairly well but you'll need a bunch of them. Bar keeps Best Friend is also good, and not too harsh. In the end I called a professional. Carpet steamer companies offer it, but we went with Window Genie. I think it was around $1-2 per square foot. We were very pleased with the results and I was able to stop making cleaning the grout my life's work

Can I ask what color your grout is supposed to be? that will help me to better answer your question. I own a small housecleaning business and I have a lot of great ideas for cleaning.

Hi F.,

For the grout, I would try Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It is amazing. It cleans just about anything. A tip I had received at one of those candle demos we have all been to, is that after you burn a candle, and most of it is gone, take it and chop it up and use it like potpourri. Put it in a baggy and place it in your linen closet, closet floors, etc.

Good luck!
