Immune systems are built by being exposed to germs and fighting off that particular illness. If they don't get those when they are little, like in day care or preschool, they still get them, they just get them in Kindergarten.
My 2 year old seems to catch everything and then it turns into a respitory issue for him. A few months ago he got RSV.
He is going into preschool soon and I was wondering what tips you fantastic parents have for building up an immune system?
(besides eating plenty of veggies..lol)
thanks
Immune systems are built by being exposed to germs and fighting off that particular illness. If they don't get those when they are little, like in day care or preschool, they still get them, they just get them in Kindergarten.
1. You can build up an immune system. Don't let someone tell you that you can't.
2. Don't use Tylenol as it depletes Glutathione which is the grease to move the immune system.
3. Be very careful on vaccines. Do the research! Start with Dr. Robert Sears book, The Vaccine Book.
4. Reduce the sugar and processed foods.
5. Check the Vitamin D level (simple blood test) and have an optimal range. They are finding that everyone, especially children, are deficient in Vitamin D. D3 is the crucial one. It comes in pill (they are small gel or capsule) or liquid form - just make sure it is D3.
5. Find out what foods cause allergens or inflammation in your child. So many children are now allergic to things such as eggs, dairy/casein, soy, yeast, wheat/gluten. There is a skin pricking test (I think this is a form of torture for kids) and the one I recommend is a blood test which will check for inflammation inside the body (IgG is what we have done). Remove the foods and the respiratory problems could /should go away.
6. Omega 3s are very important. Find one that is made from the smaller fish as it will have less mercury and use Olive, Grapeseed and Coconut oils to cook with. Reduce the amount of Omega 6s from the diet which are canola, soybean, sunflower, etc. Most fast food places use these oils because they are cheaper.
I would not go the way of colostrum and other things yet until I do the above.
For years my daughter had terrible ear, lung, skin problems until I insisted we do further allergy testing. We did the skin test at 18 months and found that egg, soy, and corn were major culprits. At 10, found out that wheat, dairy, all yeast, several beans, and a few other minor things were the problem. We went cold turkey and removed everything on the list. No more asthma. No more skin problems such as hives, rashes, eczema (Sensaria Natural Bodycare helped with that. Email me if you want to try it and get a first time discount). This was huge as we were doing breathing treatments, four different prescriptions on a daily basis, and on a first name basis with everyone at the doctor's office as we saw them weekly.
I bought a book on Amazon called Super Immunity for Kids and it's all about the essential fatty acids and the lack there of in our diets. Simple things like squeezing a flaxseed capsule into your kids juice in the morning can make a HUGE difference in his immune system. I started giving my oldest flaxseed and rubbing evening primrose oil onto her skin when she was 2 months old to get rid of her eczema. Guess what...it got rid of her eczema and she NEVER got sick. So I kept doing it. She's 2.5 now and the healthiest kid we know. I now do the same thing for my 2.5 month old just for the immunity boost. I recommend getting the book and visiting your local GNC store.
Best of luck!
I have to insist u use juice plus soft chews. It's fruit and vegetables and it's proven to build up a healthy immune system. Check the research at wethriveonjuiceplus.com. I can get it for u free on the childrenshealthstudy.com. Dr sears talks about the immune system benefits on his site too askdrsears.com. I wish u the best!
you cannot build an immune system.. you can feed him good healthy foods.. fruit veggies whole grains.. just a healthy diet.
my younger child started daycare/preschool at 23 months.. he was sick from october through march... (except for christmas break when he finally got healthy)
but he got colds.. just garden variety colds... runny nose, cough.. very rarely a fever... I think he did great for his first year in childcare...
It is totally normal and expected for kids to catch everything they are exposed to.. that is how they build an immune system. they are exposed to a germ.. catch it and fight it off.. then they dont have to catch that germ again.
my first thought was lots of good old fashioned digging in the dirt. Recent studies show that kids live in environments that are too clean and therefore don't get exposed in little amounts to things so they just get the super dose of it in school and get sick. Spending time outside and small amounts of sun exposure (wear sunscreen or hats) helps immune systems
take advantage this summer and get dirty!
Since he is so young and supplements are so tricky, I would suggest really trying to focus on giving him nutrient dense foods that provide omega 3s, vitamin c, zinc, selinium, vitamin d, and the like to help fortify his system. Walnuts are a great source of omega 3 and selinium so maybe purchase some raw walnuts and make a nut butter out of them. Spinach and iron and vitamin c so maybe puree a batch of it and try to hide it in your pasta or pizza sauce. If you google the topic, I'm sure that you will find some easy ways of incorporating immunity boosting foods into your son's diet. Also, since your son is 2-years old, I imagine that you are not giving him a lot of sugary foods in his diet but, just in case, start paying attention to the amount of sugar that he is getting in process foods or treats, if that is part of his diet, because sugar does compromise the bodies immune system.
Also, if all else fails, there are doctors who specialize on integrative health, homeopathic medicine or natualpathic medicine. You may want to consult with one of them to learn more about your son's RSV issues and how to help him as naturally as possible without having to rely on a bunch of chemicals or pharmaceuticals.
Best of luck to you and your son.
I'd also try the following:
* probiotics - e.g. http://www.culturelle.com/
* a great tasking nutritional supplement with lots of fruit/veggies - http://www.amazon.com/Amazing-Grass-Kids-Superfood-powder...
* I'd also recommend going Green - e.g. getting rid of traditional cleaners and go "natural" (vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, etc)

good luck! :)
Try protien shakes that has immuneity boosters add to them. Now that it is summer he might like to have them and be freshing for him to drink. You can make them with frozen yogurt and fresh fruit and powdered protein and immuneity supplements. Plus you can enjoy them with him so that he doesn't think anything of it.
Hope this helps and Enjoy.
Maybe just vitamins and eating well. That's about all you can do. Keep a cool air humidifier in his room for when he's sleeping. That will help keep his nose moist and help him breathe better.
Good luck!
You are right with the lots of fruits and veggies, but watch the sugar.
Sugar has been scientifically proven to decrease our immune system and it hides in places you wouldn't think of. Some 6 ounce cartons of yogurt have as much sugar (or almost) as a 12 ounce can of soda! You can look at any label and find the sugar grams. Whatever that number is, divide it by 4 and that will tell you how many teaspoons of sugar per serving that item has.
Also watch artificial colors and flavors.
Good Luck and good for you for figuring this out early!
Ah...if it were that easy. Back in the day when dirt was dirt and food was food...but now we are faced with so many other factors...toxicity, pollutants, pesticides I could go on. The best offense is a great defense.
I recommend these to all my clients:

I buy Echinacea from whole foods and a few drops in my daughter morning juice. It is tasteless and it seems to help since she is rarely sick!
There are different bbrands and I think that the price ranges from $7-$12. They will last a lot!
Hope this helps!
I'd consider colostrum. Kirkmans has a liquid that I used to give my asd son
Chiropractic care, probiotics, vitamins, and a little dirt now and then! :)
