Hello:
I am considering a career as a community college faculty. I have some teaching and adult training experience and I have been working in Corporate HR function for the past 5 years and as a recruiter before that for 4 years.
I have a Masters degree in Cultural Studies.
Does anyone have ideas where and how can start looking for adjunct positions? Do I need any additional training certification?
Thanks

I know what we do in my department is put a list of lecturers together who are able to teach specific courses. I would first contact the departments (and think broadly--you might fit in a SOC, ANTH, American Studies or English Department with a degree like Cultural Studies) in community colleges that you would like to adjunct for and find out what the process is and what there need is--honestly different departments within a college probably have different protocols--but that's how I'd start. I know to teach at 4-year university you don't need any additional "teacher" training--just your degree--although everything is so competitive now in academia depending on your field you might need a PhD, but you never know. As you probably know--the pay is horrible--just something to consider when you're thinking about mileage, prep, grading, etc.
It depends on you field of expertise as to whether or not you need certification. THe best thing I can reccomend is to go to the website(s) of the community college(s) where you would like to seek employment and take a look at their job descriptions / requirements for the adjunct pool. You can go on from there.
You will need 18 graduate hours in the field of study you plan to teach. 3 yrs of experience is helpful. You must know you are up against the best...MS, PHD. Adjuncts do not make much I would say 3-5k. I would say it is a job for the retired to supplement income. Good luck to you!
depends on what you're planning to teach! i'm adjuct faculty at our local community college and i have no degree. i teach 'enrichment' courses which is acadamese for 'pond scum.'
:)
of course, i get paid accordingly.

I'm an administrative assistant, but worked in the academic field for 8 years. You have to have at least a MS, since you do then that's great. I would try some community colleges in the area, seeing if you can meet with the program heads of the departments you would like to work in.
I'm adjunct faculty at a local community college. You need at least 18 GRADUATE hours in whatever field you decide to teach-- but they look for M.A.'s and Ph.D.'s. In most fields, you'll at least need the M.A. This is not a job you do for the money! Expect to get about $550 per credit hour; for adjuncts, there is a 3-4 course maximum load per semester. You'll make about $1000 a month with a 3 course load.
Good luck.
