My 5 year old daughter has shown interest in how water towers work. Recently she asked what they do with trash. She now wants to visit a dump. Do you know if the city will allow this? Do they give tours about watertowers and how they work??

What can I do next?

I think Margie G is thinking of Mighty Machines. My sons (6 and 3) love them. I've learned some things too.

Definitely call to find out. When our son was little and really into fire trucks, my father called our local fire station. Not only did they give our son and his grandpa a tour, they took our son for a ride in a fire truck around the parking lot. He was beyond thrilled! Never hurts to ask. Even if they don't have a formal tour program, they might make something happen for you.

You need to come to the Austin Dump.. It is called TDS..Texas Disposal Systems... They have wild life living on the property!

They have an area where you can see how it is sorted.. An area where they have a Plant Nursery and soil.. It is all very interesting.. Here is the link.. Good summer field trip.. Come after all of this glorious rain passes!

I would call the landfill where your trash is taken and ask if they have any educational tours for kids.

A quick google search shows that you can request a presentation...

not sure if that means a tour or not - I didn't read more into it.

I would call and ask straight from the horses mouth. Then you'll know hours, costs (if any) and any details you might need!

Good Luck! I think it's great your kid is showing interest in how things are done!!

Call your city. One of our local counties does dump tours. They have a small van to drive up to 10 kids and parents on the tour and sometimes even have a make your own sundae thing at the end. We haven't been yet, but I have a friend who coordinates them for her local mom's group.

Our school took the kids on a tour of the recycling facility. Not one yet for the dump :) But as kids, we used to take big items to the dump - I'm sure you could just go in?
I know electricity plants sometimes offer tours (more of a summer time thing). We've had friends who were tour guides. I think it would be a matter of calling ahead.

Good luck :)

** we had a series of videos years ago that were geared around this kind of thing - my kids were really into that kind of stuff, can't remember the name - it was more based on machines, but explained how things worked too. You might want to google - if you can't see it in person.

Do call to find out what they can offer. Our dump, managed by the county, is open for anyone bringing stuff to dump. If they aren't able to give you a tour, gather up a load of trash and see for yourself. There is a charge to dump trash. Another community in which I lived provided a "store" at the dump site where you could buy useful stuff for very little money.

This is so funny cause last night my girls (16 and 12) and I were just discussing that we don't get water towers and why they are there or why they even exist. We will be going to youtube for answers, cause almost everything has a youtube video now, lol. Just google it and you will find something to explain it.
