How Soon Can You Change Your Hair Color After You've Dyed It?

Hi Mommas,
I've been dying my hair for about a year, but haven't hit on just the right color yet (a rich dark brown, sounds simple but everything I've tried so far has been a little too red or a little too golden). Last time I did it, it was too light - a little too golden brown. So this time I picked a darker brown shade, according to the package - and my hair is black now! Not quite what I was looking for. I'm living with it for a little while to see if I can get used to it. But if I still don't like it in another week or so, I'd like to change it.

Here are my questions:
1) how soon can I use another at-home dye without anything funky happening to either the color or my hair? In the past I've waited several months between, and I don't know if there is a minumum amount of time you have to wait.
2) can I put a medium brown over the black? Or is it impossible to go lighter this way?

I don't dislike it enough to spend $100 at the salon to fix it. I'm looking for at-home advice. If there is no at-home solution, I'll live with it.

TIA!

What can I do next?

Look at the dye package for the hot line number (or check their web site) and call them.
I did that once.
I tried an auburn that looked wonderful on the box but it came out a very loud bright Bozo red on my head.
The hot line told me which color (a brown) to get to cool it down.
I dyed it on a Friday and they said I could dye again with the correction color on Sunday - so they had me wait about 48 hours.
The corrected color was great but my hair was very brittle for a long while even with frequent heavy duty conditioners.

Take a look on the box for a 800 number. Clairol used to have a help line to help you with exactly this sort of thing. Be sure to tell them, in your closest approximation what your natural hair color texture is. If you have any gray, if you have any areas that are color resistant. Finally tell them what color you used last, and what color you are hoping to achieve.

My college roommate was hoping for black with red undertones, not blue undertones, she accomplished that by using a combination of colors which I would not have ever picked and following the directions at the help line.

Good luck to you and yours,
F. B.

It depends on the particular dye you used. I would call either the 800 number for customer service on the box or a reputable stylist and ask.
