I am doing spring cleaning today, and I think it's time to throw out the sippy cups. I am wondering if I will regret it! When did u throw yours out / how old were your kids?

What can I do next?

My youngest is 3 and still uses them. He drinks from a regular cup every day at school, and sometimes here at the house, but I get REALLY tired of the spills -especially his beloved red, strawberry-banana juice! So, call me lazy, but I'm pretty confident he won't be in high school with a sippy, so right now I'm just not worried about it!

My son is 6 and I am with the Mamas that we still use them for travel. At Christmas we went to my Grandmas and she has a nice house with new carpet. We brought along some sippys b/c I didn't want to have to deal with being sorry when he spilled.

At home or at my mom's where spills are livable he uses an open cup. I also like to have a sippy on hand in case someone comes to visit with their little one.

My daughter is 4 and I still use them, but they are only for her juice first thing in the morning because she might sit on the couch and watch TV for a while and at least I don't have to worry about juice spilling all over. She uses a regular cup at the table, and we also have the sports bottles that we keep filled with water, especially when we are in the car.

mine is 5 and is perfectly capable of drinking responsibly out of a regular cup. so we do for meals. but if it's in the living room i require him to have a lid. doesn' t matter if it's a "sippy" cup or a grownup cup with some kind of lid. but we do have a few around still for that purpose.

"I" don't even drink out of cups with no lids, in my car. that sounds like an accident waiting to happen. IF he drinks in the car (which is rare) it's usually for a long trip and those drinks always have lids.

She is 8 and he is 5. We still use the take n toss ones with straws. I have light carpet and drinks get spilled. Even visiting kids use them. If you think about it, we as adults use them all the time, they are called Styrofoam cups with lids and straws....lol.

So, we still use ours on a daily basis.

Mine are 9 & 11. They still take water filled sippy cups to bed. My 11 year old has taken them to bed full and when he comes to the kitchen in the AM it's still full. My 9 year old? Nope still drinks out of it. THAT is the only time they use them.

We use cups with lids and straws for other portions of the house as I have boys and they can turn one touch into a wrestle and things get knocked over - fast.

I'm supposed to throw them out?! LOL. Still use them for traveling, but lately they have been disentagrating on us. Now we use the straw-based cups with lids for traveling or I let them use a travel coffee mug.

My girls are 4.5 and 5.5 and we still use sippy cups but with out any safety valves....they tend to knock over the cups constantly so this helps with the spills. They drink out of water bottles and such also. We started using regular cups when they were around 2.5/3. I would suggest keeping a few cups for bedtime use or when they are not feeling well (comfort/spill thing).
Good luck in your decision!

Around 2 1/2, we switched to the take and toss straw cups for travel or colored liquids. Now, we only use real cups. She has a few of her own travel mug/bottles for water on the go.

I stopped sippies asap, because any dentist will tell you they are terrible for your child's teeth, especially if they are drinking milk or juice or other sugary drinks. i'm sure kids would appreciate a more grown up cup/bottle. Plus, sippy lids are disgusting and so hard to keep clean!

My daughter is 5 and we have just one sippy cup. I have her use it for her fruit smoothie drinks since they will stain if they spill. She drinks from regular cups and will use her washable water bottle when we travel. I would keep at least one or two until they are just sitting in the cabinet and never being used.

My DD is 4 and I still use them for her milk in the morning b/c she likes to snuggle with me on the couch and drink her milk and I don't want spills on my carpet. For the rest of the day though, she uses a big girl cup that has to stay in the kitchen.

After her second birthday I stopped replacing them. DD is 4 now and we still have two or three straw cups that we use with regular straws, instead of the ones they came with.

I love what adansmama had to say! I am so with you!

My kids still use them around the house and in the car, because they are terrible about spills. They are perfectly capable of using a regular cup, but they are just so rambunctious I haven't had the courage.

Maybe it's because I'm so accident prone, but I personally use the new straw cups for adults. I have one at work and two at home and that's pretty much all I ever use. I've just cleaned up way too many spills and even ruined a carpet. No thank you! We'll stick with cups that have lids.

I know there is a debate about whether or not using sippys effects teeth and speech. I think the jury is pretty much still out this one. My dentist and my ped (both in their mid to late 30's) agree that it's important for kids to know how to use a regular cup but it is perfectly ok to continue using a sippy.

I only have them for bedtime/travel. DD is 3 and gosh...I can't remember when she switched up to regular cups most of the time. Probably a year now. Funny thing is we kept the old tupperware cups from SD and now DD uses them! I have put many of DD's cups away to make room, but I have lots of little relatives who can use them when they visit so they're not going AWAY yet.

If you are done and they are still useable, why not donate them to a women's shelter?

with my daycare, the lids are removed by age 2 or a little later, depending on the child. I am a firm believer in a greater incidence of speech issues when using sippy cups long-term. Drinking straight from a cup develops critical muscles needed for proper speech.....or at least that's what my pediatrician told me 20+ years ago. & based on my observation within our circle of friends/family....his theory has held true! :)

Both of my kids have sippy cups in their beds with water in them. They get thirsty in the night & I don't want them getting out of bed to come & ask me for a drink @ 3am! My daughter is almost 7 and my son is 3 1/2. I have been on the hunt for water bottles that don't spill or leak & have yet to find one, that is why they still have sippys of water in bed with them. That is the ONLY time my daughter has used a sippy since she was 2. I'll still give my son one if we're in the car or if we're at someone's house for dinner & they have a carpeted dining room. He still spills occasionally & I don't want milk spilled on someone's nice carpet. Otherwise, it is regular cups at the table.

I thought all of mine were gone - but then I found one in the sink the other day. It was right to the trash!! My kids are 8, 6, and 4...almost 5, 7, and 9. They use cups with lids for fun, but no need for sippy cups at all for 2 or more years now. We don't allow them to drink or eat anywhere but the kitchen and dining room. Well, they can take water to the living room, but that's it.

My son was young...like 18 months! He was able to drink from a cup really early, like when he as a year old. I just used the sippy because if I wasn't looking, he would pour it out or or car trips it was good. I think some kids are even 3 when the parents throw out the sippys.

As for the car, we use a thermos with a straw. It doesn't spill if it's knocked over. Who uses open containers in cars...adult or child?

My youngest is 3 and never used them, so we've had them gone for at least 3 years. We do open cups, and only at the table. Even when we have friends over, the rules are either water only, or cups stay at the table. Preferably both. Now most of our friends know if they prefer something other than an open cup, to bring it with them. I do keep plastic cups for when we eat outside. Other than that, we use glass. Even with the 3 and 5 year old getting cups out by themselves using a stool, we've never had a broken glass.

I never used a sippy cup. DS started using a regular cup at daycare at about 8-9 months old. I never saw the point of teaching them there is no gravity and then having to reteach the lesson.

He has always had his food and drink in the kitchen or dining room - just like DH and me. So I have never worried he would spill his drink all over the house.
