My almost 5 and almost 8 year old daughters go roller skating, the first time was age 4. The skating rink has this little walker-type thing with wheels called a trainer that my younger daughter uses. My older daughter has her own roller skates I bought her, they have stiffer, more supportive ankles.

We started going when my oldest was 5 and youngest was almost 3. They both started with the adjustable snap-on skates that go over their shoes. They caught on quickly, and now it's 2 years later, the oldest skates independently wearing regular skates, while the 4 year old holds my hand and we go slowly. They both really enjoy it.

Three years or older.

We took ours when he was 3 or 4 and he loved it, we obviously had to hold his hand most of the time. Unfortunately, it was preteen/teen night and the kids were all booty humping each other on the skating rink and acting like annoying thugs. So... make sure you go during a nice family friendly time!

my 9 yo and 7 yo just went tonight, They have their own in line skates for playing in our paved driveway and had tried ice skating once before. They did ok and have fun with their friends. I did see 4 yo there but to be honest they got in the way for everyone else, even the good 4 yos just because their legs were so little.

We have a rink here and I love to skate. I think probably around 4-5 would be a good age. They are sturdier on their feet and can learn to balance.

We still go skating every now and then. Its fun and a great workout.

Our little guy prefers roller blades, he just turned 5. The girl, age 8, doesn't really like them but like the old fashioned ones instead.

Our son when for the first time right after he turned three...had I thought about it earlier it would have been earlier than that.

I'd like to say the earlier the better because they tend to not be scared the younger they are and they pick up on things easier. I know this doesn't work for everyone but my son walked very early (started before he was 8 months and was completely independent by 10 months). He had very strong leg muscles and we took him when he was 14 months old and tightened the wheels...he did great. My daughter tried it when she was 3 and was less scared than when we go now and she's now 5.

My GD tried to skate from the time she was five. Never did catch on real well. Then she started asking for roller blades. I figured if she couldn't skate on four wheels, she wouldn't be able to roller blade. Boy was I wrong! From the first time she put on the roller blades, she could skate. She still can't skate well using regular roller skates.

I think five is a good age but really any age, as long as they can walk.

Wow! They still have roller skating rinks anywhere?
I would say as long as he's walking confidently it'd be worth trying.

I bvought my 3 yr old adjustable skates and after quite a few tries she getst it. I am going to get her a real pair next summer. If going to a rink, as long as he has great balance go for it. If he is still a little unsure, just let him skate at the park or something. Like others have said, the wood floor for rinks is slippery.

I skated on the street at about 6, the old silver metal clip on skates, lol!
I went to a rink when I was about 7 or 8. It was MUCH harder than street skating, very slippery, but I was determined. It only took me a few visits to get the hang of it, and I LOVED it, all the way through junior high!
Sadly we don't live near a rink otherwise we would have been there all the time when my kids were young :(
