I pay $5 an hour for a 5 year old. I always thought the going rate was more for newborns. If it is more than a 8 hour day - I would say $50 a day is fair.
I am about to be a new mom and have no idea about how much home daycare should cost. I have a neighbor who has volunteered to watch my son 3 days a week about 8-9 hrs per day. How much should I be paying her for a newborn?

I paid about $150.00 a week for full-time with a Certified daycare provider and it's about $170.00 for licensed (infants). Now, this is in Stoughton, Madison prices are much higher. Hope this helps. By the way, if your neighbor has no "formal" early childhood ed, be sure she knows about shaken baby syndrome, SIDS, and that her house is childproofed (outlets, water temp, choking hazards, etc.) Just so you can have piece of mind when away from your little one ;-)
I'm not sure about a home daycare situation, we have two children...a one month old and an about to be two year old. Our oldest is enrolled in a corporate daycare and it runs an infant rate of about $220 a week. I would say use that as a guide and go from there. I know that part of the reason the corporate rates are higher is you are getting more "set programming" etc...You may even want to figure out how much it would be a day at above minimum wage and take that. Just my two cents! We are currently in the market for a better priced daycare situation so this is a subject on my mind! Good Luck!
I am also pregnant with our first child and my husband and I just found an in home day care. The women we are going with is one of the less expensive ones we found and she charges $130 a week. Our son may not be there every day and about eight hours a day when he is. Hope this helps I know we had no idea about cost for day care when we started looking!
