How Much Do You Noitice MPG When Driving More than Avg Miles for Work?

I recently started a new job that requires a moderate amount of driving (approx 200 to 250 miles per week). I need to get a new vehicle. Before I started this job I knew exactly what I wanted. However, now that I drive so much I'm not sure. I need something big enough for my 5 year old and 9 month old twins. So I need two infant seats and one booster seat. I want a Ford Expedition, but they get lousy gas mileage. I'm wondering if anyone drives this much with a car/truck that doesn't get great MPG. Is it really that noticable since I drive more than average but still not a ton? I drive an Explorer now and get about 17 MPG. So I'm thinking I wouldn't notice much difference in an Expedition since neither one gets good MPG. It's really difficult to find something with enough room for my 3 kids that is efficient. Any thoughts? (Trying to avoid minivans - I know, they are great, luxurious, probably the most reasonable choice, but just not what I want). Thanks.

***Addition*** Thanks for the replys so far. I thought I'd add, my Explorer is paid for but it is not big enough for three car seats in the middle row with enough room. The third row seat isn't reasonably accessible with two car seats in middle row. So what I need is something with the quad seating option. If the explorer had that it would be perfect, but it doesn't so the third seat isn't useable for me now. We like the GMC Acadia, but the Expedition is bigger and since I've loved my Explorer I'd love to have another version.

What can I do next?

hahaha I drive a fullsize conversion van and told my hubby I would downsize to a Suburban, he says "it's the same da** engine!"
The Expedition will get maybe 12 mpg, that's what I get. I have a 28 gallon tank I usually fill it with 23 gallons and it costs about $65-$68 each week. I put about 300 miles a week on it.
HUbby wants a GMC 2500, I guess they are getting 17-19 mpg.
I have looked at the Buick Enclave(?) the big buick SUV, it's very nice but not big enough for me.

If your Explorer is paid for, I'd keep it. I refuse to have a car payment. If I had to choose between extra gas $ per week vs. a car payment, I'd take the extra gas money per week.
If I could pay cash for a new vehicle, maybe I'd go bigger although I don't think an Explorer vs. Expedition is going to positively impact your life that dramatically day to day. We have a Ford Explorer.

I never realized how much a big SUV would cost to fill up until I borrowed my dad's Expedition. Huge difference! My Odyessy is much better. If you are too cool to drive a van I would suggest a crossover such as the Acadia. Gas is predicted to go up to $5 a gallon this year. I read that resale for all SUVs is horrible right now b/c of it.

And I like my van much better than the 3 Explorers that I had prior.

What about the new Honda Pilot....it is bigger this year, has enough space for what you describe and very family friendly and safe.

It's up to you, but I would consider keeping the Explorer unless it's truly on it's last legs. We are/were a "Ford Family" and until I purchased my Honda Pilot I only drove Explorers. My father has always driven an Expedition and I will tell you that the "seat space" isn't that different.

If you REALLY need to purchase a new vehicle, I love my Pilot. I get 15 MPG on the highway and drive daily for work, not including my 50 mile commute. Plenty of space and very safe/ low maintenance.

5 years ago I started driving 90 miles a day, round trip for my job. At the time I was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee and had to fill it up every 3 or 3 1/2 days. I have since switched to a sedan and now fill it up every 4 or 4 1/2 days. My car also has a trip calculator and gives me information regarding consumption and average speed. Yes, I'm the nerd in the far right lane driving 55 mph on the highway.

If you're already used to a low-mileage vehicle then you'll probably not even notice much of a difference unless you switched to something completely different.
