I have been told that breastfed babies never take in more than 5 oz at a time. Is this true even for babies 8 mos and older?

I would suggest giving him more baby food. Sometimes babies try to fill up on milk but what they need is more solids.

I think the thing to remember is that all kids are different. At 4 to5 months old, my son would only take in about 3-4 oz of pumped breastmilk... Now at 10 months , he can do up to about 8-9oz, although on average I'd say he usually drinks 6-7oz. I think it depends on what time of day he's fed, if he's more tired, or if any solids were introduced. Also, while hard to say for certain since there's no way to measure how much he takes in when nursed directly, I suspect he drank a tad less when it was straight from the breast since he's able to self regulate how much he "needs" or "wants" vs me trying to get him to finish what was pumped into the bottle. Hope this helps!

My son sometimes took 8 oz of pumped breastmilk at 8 mos. Unless he's got reflux or some reason to limit him, just feed him until he doesn't want any more... He won't just keep on eating.

my daughter around 6 ounces of formula at 4 months old and eventually went to 3 (8 ounce bottles) of formula. I don't know why the amount of breastmilk would be that much different.

That has been true for my daughter-- usually no more than 5 oz at a time. It is still true for her at 14 months old. She eats solids now and still drinks breast milk as well as Goat's Milk and drinks between 2 and 5 ounces at one sitting. I know the amounts because my nanny keeps a log of her intake when I am at work. We added protein to her diet recently which turns out she loves. I think she had been craving meat for a while and I wonder if that is something to consider for your hungry boy?

This is a GREAT resource that I give to all my moms who have this question! http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html

I'm a peer counselor with Nursing Mothers Counsel, and we get this question all the time. Whoever told you that babies never take more than 5oz at a feeding was misinformed. Babies are all different and even differ from feeding to feeding. Baby may eat a lot at his/her first feeding of the day, then just want to snack at the next. Just like adults, baby appetites vary based on mood, comfort, digestive regularity, and of course, hunger. This is one reason it's not a good idea to put babies on a strict schedule.

If you have any questions in the future, you can always call Nursing Mothers Counsel at (650) 327-MILK or go to our website http://www.nursingmothers.org. There are many information sheets on our website, or you can talk one-on-one with a peer counselor for FREE!

I have a 11 month old baby boy and have been breastfeeding exclusively. In the morning when I am the fullest, I would pump out 5 1/2oz per breast. When he was around 8 and 9 months old he would have this much in the morning. However, for the past month he has been drinking from both sides! (in the morning) So I know he is getting about 8 or more oz of breast milk at that time. And after that he still has his cereal with 2oz of expressed milk and fruit. He drinks a lot of breast milk in the morning and just after lunch. The rest of the feedings during the day are about 4 oz. (feeds about 5-6 time a day)

I read a article from the Am.Pediatric Assoc. that breast fed babies (as they get closer to 1 years old) need to have 24oz a day. Remember these are just guidelines! Your baby will tell you we he is hungry and full.

Hope this helps :)

Based on other people's answers I would say that every kid is different.
The breastfeeding site: www.kellymom.com is good and might answer your question.

My daughter was drinking 7oz of breastmilk by 8 months and she did fine. She's 10 months now and I still give her the same amount 3x/day since she's eating solids 3x/day too. She doesn't always finish the bottles but at least I limit her intake at one sitting. My friend said his pedi doctor said to max 9 oz of fluid because their tiny body can't handle more than that.

Hope this helps!!

My son could chug 8-9 oz of pumped BM at 6 months, but by daughter, nearing 8 months, only drinks in the 4-6 oz range. That said, my son only nursed 4x/day at 8 months and slept 12 hours straight; he was always under the weight curve until he turned 2 yo. My daughter usually wakes 1x/night to nurse and she is above the weight curve.

They are all so different!
