so i jsut switched makenzie to formula..and im wondering, how much is average for a 3 month old to eat per feeding? i didnt get much sleep last night because she wouldnt sleep and seemed hungry. she ate 6oz at 11...and again at 2, 4:30, 7:30, and then about 4.5 oz at 9:30. (she was also wide awake from 4:30am until 11:30am..mostly content, but just wouldnt sleep.)
at first i didnt think she could be hungry that much, but id tried everything else and eating was the only thing that calmed her down.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks guys :)
shes doing a lot better now, usually going 3 hours between daytime feedings and every 3-4 hours at night. i also switched to enfamil lipil ar because she was spitting up so much and that seems to have helped. (everytime she spit up shed wake up screaming). its a little rough to get used to, when i was breastfeeding she would go 5-7 hours at night...
does anyone know if WIC covers that specific formula? and if i have to jump through hoops to get it through them?

Her schedule sounds pretty normal. She may also want to eat because this is new and she needs some adjusting. If you want her on a schedule you could do what I did, although it was difficult for me to lose so much sleep for a couple of nights. I expanded the time between feedings by 15-30 minutes. I had to sooth my baby until the extra time had passed but he would end up eating more and sleeping longer. I would do a couple of feedings at the same length of time apart then expand the time again. During the day I let him eat when he was hungry and at night I continued until he was 4 hours between feedings. That really helped.

I have a friend who put their 2 month old on a schedule and now she is sleeping through the night.. it sounded mean at first but their baby doesn't seem to mind.. it isn't like they let her scream and scream.. she usually just fusses and squirms when she doesn't get what she wants..

So.. they started giving her 4 oz.. (or as much as she would eat) every 4 hours.. sometimes if she made a big enough stink they'd do it at 3.5 hours.. sometimes she doesn't drink the whole 4 oz sometimes she drinks 4.5 oz... and now she is sleeping long strides through the night I think from 7:30pm to 5:30am...

But she does have nights where she wants to just be awake too.. it is just a part of being a baby.. try just letting her be awake in a crib while you catch some sleep..

Good luck..

My kids are 2 and 3 I cannot remember how much they ate at that age...But I do remember they are supposed to get 24oz total in 24 hours..

Oh yeah.. and at night.. I would put room temp bottles of water near the bed.. and have the formula measured out in another container and just mix in bed and throw it in their mouth as we all stayed in bed.. if I had to change them I'd do it in bed too.. don't turn on the lights so she doesn't think she can get up and be awake.. and my kids were fine with room temp water.. so is my friend's baby..

Baby should eat about 2.5oz per pound. How much per feeding depends on how often you feed. The times she is eating sound about normal. New babies are often wakeful at night. Try to keep stimulation to a minumum and she'll learn that night time is for sleeping.

Sleep:

Im not sure if this is much of a suggestion, since you just switched her to formula...plus its kind of controversial to some, but I just thought I would share what I did to switch my babies nights and days around from the time they came home.

Because I nursed for over a year w/ my son and over 2 yrs with my daughter, this was fairly simple.

I slept with my children. (That was key number one) For me, I kept my little one in the nook of my arm. That way I was sure not to roll over onto them. -Maybe a little uncomfortable, but just like you get used to not sleeping on your tummy when your pregnant, it wasn't that big of a deal. -With them on my arm I could feel the first little wiggles they would make prior to waking up completely. So, before they could wake, I latched them on so that they could nurse, because thats always what they wanted in the night.

As far as diaper changes, I became very skilled at changing w/one hand while they laid and nursed, with all my products pretty much in bed with me. (We had a king sized bed)

Im sure, if you even want to try sleeping w/your baby, you could come up with some teamwork between you and your husband to heat up a bottle or two. -The point is, as soon as they wiggle, try to get it in their mouth asap! :0) It saved me a ton of sleep at night, I bonded beautifully with my children...and fear not, my now three and six year olds are in their own beds.

Hello M. R that sounds about right but if you would like add a little ceral with her formula at bed time that will fill her up a little more we did that with both of our daughters and they slept so good. but before that our schedule looked about like yours. but big difference when we added a little ceral. maybe try that.if you are giving her only 6oz maybe at her main feedings give her 8 oz. good luck ~L. Well if it makes you feel any better, my daughter is just a few days shy of 7 months & has been on formula her entire life...we are lucky to get her to drink 6 oz every 2 hours!!!!

I think that a baby who is 3 months should be eating somewhere between 38-45 oz in a 24 hour period.

My daughter is still waking up in the night...she goes to bed about 8pm & gets up at 10pm, 1 or 2am, 4 or 5am, and 6 or 7am. :-)

i would try mixing breastmilk in the formula. it helps babies digest easier and has substances in it that help sedate and soothe baby (and make them sleepy).

My daughter is 3 mos as well and has started to take 6 oz bottle most of the time, and if not the whole bottle usually in the next 30 mins she will finish the rest of it. So sounds right on target. Plus she might be in a growth spurt mode too.

When I started my son on a bottle at 10 mos he would only take 4 oz and that concerned me but doc told me that my milk could be richer then the formula so didn't need as much (tummy was not used to holding so much at one time) but by a month later he was up to 6 oz and so on until 8 oz.
