How Many Sonograms Did You Have During Pregnancy?

Just curious what the norm was out there. With my first, I think I had like three sonograms and with my second (I was 35), I only had one. I am now pregnant with my third (25 wks along & I just turned 37) and have only had one so far and it looks like that's all I'm going to have. I do have a history of having super easy pregnancies, so maybe that's why. I just think it's ironic that I had so many with my first and I wasn't considered "old" yet and now that I'm past 35 (officially old whan you're pregers, lol) I've only had one.

What can I do next?

I was pregnant at 34, and only had 1 official ultrasound (at 18 weeks), since everything was normal and there were no other concerns. But working at a veterinary office, I would ultrasound myself all the time. :)

My pregnancies were high-risk, so I had one every other week from the beginning until about 26 weeks and then I had two per week from week 26 - 37. Both of my children are fine despite multiple ultrasounds.

I worked for an an ob, so I had like 6-8 official sono's and then probably another 4 or so in office just for fun.

I had one with each of my previous two pregnancies, the first was to make sure everything looked good b/c I was spotting, the second was very early to get a due date b/c I didn't have a reliable last menstrual date, and my current pregnancy will have one in a couple of weeks to find out the sex. I have always gone to midwives and ultrasounds are very optional with low risk pregnancies...I think different offices do them more or less frequently b/c they either have a machine in the office or they don't. Obviously if there is a risk or problem that needs to be monitored the you will have more but in a normal healthy pregnancy there is no medical reason to do them at all!

I had one with my oldest and then none with the second or third. There is no reason for them if you are healthy and the baby is growing. I am a midwife and many of my clients opt not to have an ultrasound. There are usually signs that something may not be medically right and then at that point we can go for an ultrasound. Also, in the midwife world 35 is not old. That is just ridiculous. As long as you are healthy there is not a greater risk just because you reach a certain magical age. Also, ultrasound is uncomfortable for the baby. I think as time goes on we will actually discover that so many ultrasounds during pregnancy is causing problems.
You also do not need ultrasounds to determine the position of the baby. A good practioner can tell you exactly the position of the baby just by feeling around on the mother's belly.

Let's see...
My first pregnancy, age 27, I had 4 ultrasounds done. One to confirm the pregnancy, one at 13 weeks bc they couldn't hear the heartbeat externally, one at 20 weeks to determine sex and the final one at 34 weeks to check the size of the baby.
My second pregnancy, age 29, I had 5 ultrasounds. One to confirm, one to check heartbeat again, one to determine sex, another at 30 weeks bc my blood pressure was doing CRAZY things, and a final one at 35 weeks to determine size.

answers from San Diego on

#1 I had 2. One in the beginning to do the check for multiples, heartbeat, confirm pregnancy etc then one midway when they check all the anatomy and you can learn the sex. Those were all.
#2 I had 4. The initial one at the first visit, the one where they check anatomy. At that one they found fluid around his heart and lungs and right after I got the bloodwork that said possible downs. So sonogram 3 was the one where they check more thoroughly for any issues. After the amnio came back as an all clear I had one more at which point the fluid had resolved and we were given the "clean bill of health". Had a healthy, no issue baby :)
#3...umm..let me see if I can count, at least 4 if not 5. 1st at initial visit. 2nd when the blood test came back as possible downs(false positive again! no amnio and nothing wrong on the sonogram) 3rd was already scheduled before the in depth was scheduled and my other kids were looking forward to it. I had at least 1 if not 2 more because she hung out mostly sideways in the third trimester so they wanted to check her position(she turned head down the night before the sonogram and turned back sideways the day after the sonogram! LOL) and make sure she had room to move. She kept flipping for a couple months and settled head down about 2 weeks before she was born.
None of them were because of my age (I was 30, 33 & 38) and none of them were to "judge the baby's size" or anything of that nature. All of my "issues" turned in to "non-issues" as well.

I had 4. One for the sex and make sure everything was ok. One when I fell, one again just to see how things were, and then one while I was in labor. With the last one, they just wanted to double check that he had flipped and to say "next time you see him, he'll be in your arms" yeah that wasn't a total blow to the head! Wow, a baby!

I had two with my first one, and only one with my second. I think that as long as you don't have any issues, only one is necessary. I can't remember why I had two with my first one; all I know is that it was when I first found out I was pregnant (I had no clue) and I was about 7 weeks or so...I guess it depends on the doctor whether they do one that early. My second one I only had the "big" one where they can tell the gender and all that (though with both, we kept it a surprise). Congratulations on your new baby!!

I was 32 when I delivered my first, and I had 3 done with that pregnancy - 1) my initial visit because I was bleeding, 2) at my first trimester screening around 12 weeks, and 3) at my 20 week appt.

I was 35 when I delivered my 2nd...and I had 6 during that pregnancy.
1) initial visit again, 2) first trimester screening, 3) cvs at 13 weeks, 4) 20 week appt, 5) 27 weeks to check baby's growth due to doc finding a single umbilical artery at the 20 week sonogram, 6) 34 weeks for the same reason

So I guess it really depends on your dr and specifics of the pregnancy more than your age...I think if the doc doesn't want you to have a lot, that's a good sign that all is good and your baby is healthy!

With my first pregnancy I had twins, so I had an ultrasound every time I went (I think it turned out to be around 20 ultrasounds). Now that I'm pregnant with my third, I've had six so far and will have one more at 32 weeks. Early on I had spotting, so I had three of them before 7 weeks to check that the baby was still growing and developing, and he gave me a "bonus" one last week to double check the sex of the baby. However, the norm in my practice is four. You get one at your first two appointments (thank goodness or we wouldn't have found out it was twins for a LONG time), one at 20 weeks, and the last one at 32 weeks.

Well, my first pregnancy was considered high-risk for a few months, then back down to normal but I ended up with 6 ultrasounds from 3 to 8 months.

I'm only 16weeks now and have had two, with a third in two weeks and at least one more after that but maybe more.

Three isn't that much really, and yes, having really easy pregnancies means less ultrasounds.

It really depends on 2 things: your doctor and your insurance company. Some doctors will do them right there in their office and never bill for them, just put them down as part of the exam, a friend of mine had one just about every visit. My doctor sends me to a radiology place and because my insurance company will only cover 2 (first trimester and second trimester) unless there is a good medical reason, that is all I get. this pregnancy is a little more complicated so I may have 3, but I will probably have to fight with the insurance company to get it covered.

I had two through the dr. One to determine how far along I was (6 weeks), and one to see if all the internal organs were developing (I forget how far along I was when this happened). Mine didn't believe in having a lot of them, but he wanted the first one because my periods weren't adding up to determine a date of conception.

I only had two with my first and third and three with my second. With my first and third I had one done when I first found out I was pregnant so they could see the heartbeat since it was too early to hear it on the doppler and then at 20 weeks to make sure everything was growing probably. With my second I had an extra one at about 25 wks cause I was measuring bigger than I should be so they wanted to make sure I was not caring too much water.

With my first baby (I was 25 yrs old) I had two. One initially to confirm pregnancy, and one at 20 weeks for the anatomical scan. I am currently 27 weeks pregnant with my second baby (I will be 28 in May) I have also had two, and my OB isn't planning on any more - barring any complications. As much as I would love to see my baby in the third trimester, I would much rather have a perfect pregnancy with no worries. In a healthy pregnancy, there isn't a medical reason to have several sonograms.

My OB typically only does two- one intially to confirm and one at 20 weeks. I, however, am at 14 weeks and will have had 5 by the time I am done- three at the beginning to get due date (1st was too early, the tech didn't record the date from the second, so that led to the third), one at 16 weeks for gender (my option, because I didn't want to wait until 20 weeks), and then the 20 week.
If not for all the initial confusion, it would only be 3.

Well, I'm sure 'standard' has changed, but with both of my full pregnancies, just one. That's all insurance would pay for and I was not having any issues to justify additional. BUT, that was 21 and 17 years ago when I was 28 and 32 years old.

Now I did miscarry between the 2 and I think I had 2-3 during that time. But had issues, therefore extra sono's needed.

Typically my OB does one confirmatory ultrasound to get possible due date, check for multiples, check heartbeat, etc and then one at 16-20 weeks to check for gender. My second had an abnormal umbilical cord so I was ultrasounded at every visit to check growth and cord status.

i think the "norm" is one, but i had bleeding at like 8 weeks, so they did one. then they did the normal one, when i found out the gender (20ish weeks maybe?). then they did one more at the very end to see if he was measuring big (he was). so a total of 3.

With my first I ended up having 6 of them! My OB will usually only send you for 3 during the whole pregnancy (first one at first appointment, 20 week ultrasound, and one in the last few weeks to get a size estimate on the baby) but, I was so small during my pregnancy that they wanted to keep checking on the babys size.
With my second I had a lot! I can't even remember exactly. One time they couldn't hear the heartbeat on the doppler and sent me right away for one, that was scary!! and then at the end of the pregnancy I had a lot because my amniotic fluid was low. So basically in any normal situation with my OB a pregnant woman would have 3 sonograms throughout the whole pregnancy.

Most women have 2-3. The first goes along with the Nuchal Tranlucency test at about 10 -12 weeks (or so), the second is the big 20 week one where they can tell the gender and you get the best pictures. I had two more after that. My son was breech so they had to confirm that he indeed was breech and then right before the planned c-section they did a quickie sonogram that they just wheeled in to make sure that yup, he was still breech!
They didn't do the nuchal translucency with you to determine your risk of Down's syndome?

S.L.

answers from Kansas City on

I had 8 children and they didn't even do sonograms in my day until my 6th or 7th child was due and I had maybe two but that's due to the fact that I had breech births 3 times. Just to check out first if all was okay and then later to see if breech. I feel like that was not needed really as the baby can turn later on too but was helpful to know anyhow. I wouldn't worry if they don't do more.

I had 6! First one was to see the heart beat, second one was because I was an ''ultrasound model'' for an Ultrasound Technician's class, third one was for my OBGYN to see baby in the second trimester, fourth one was for a 4D Ultrasound to determine sex clearly @ 17 weeks, fifth one was for my OBGYN to determine sex (I already knew I was having a boy, but I acted surprised, lol ;) And the sixth one was just recently @ 37 weeks to check up on the baby and estimate his size & weight!
