How Many Hours Does Your, or Has Your 9 Mo Old Slept?

I needed to take a survey of sorts. My 9 mo olds have always been down to 1 nap, except one child that I remember. I have read the "normal" is 12-14 hours per day. And, perhaps I just have a "good baby" that still takes 3 naps a day. Since we have had some issues with him, I just need to know when or if to get worried. How many hours does your 9 mo old baby sleep, or 9 mo olds you have had in the past?? I have known girls tend to sleep more, I think, but I could be wrong. My baby is a boy.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your responses. I have just found out that even the sleepyness and slow weight gain he has had, as well as his other "symptoms" are related to the trachealaryngomalacia that he has. He may not have apnea at all, and if he does, it would be related as well. There doesn't seem to be a real average, just average for that child, I think. Some babies sleep, some don't.

I have always let my children set their nap schedules, so be rest assured I would not eliminate his naps. I just thought that I have never had such a sleepy child. LOL My 15 mo olds tend to give up their 1 nap. I would try to put them down, and they just wouldn't go to sleep. Of course, I have preschoolers that won't take a nap unless they are in the car. And, then I can't get them to bed that night. My children think there are more important things to do then sleep. My first were scheduled, my last 4, not so much.

I guess he doesn't sleep anymore than the average even on his long days. Yesterday, he only slept 13 hours, which is more normal for MY 9 mo olds. You all have it lucky. And, I guess I have it lucky with him as well. I used to say he plays hard and naps hard, and he does. LOL

thanks very much, Kymberli

My daughter is 12 mos now and she still takes 2-3 naps a day. Finally but she didn't sleep through the night until she was 8 mos old. She wasn't really on a schedule until lately. Things are much better now. My other 2 kids were strictly 2 naps a day after like 6 mos old until 2 years. hope this helps!!

My now 14 month old baby naps for MAYBE 1 hour a day. When he was 9 mos old he would not nap at all. We've tried putting him down, creating a routine, etc... my pediatrician simply says he's "wakeful and willful". She says he is perfectly healthy. Even when he was brand new home from the hospital he slept a MAX of 8 hours a day. He was rolling over at 3 days old so he has ALWAYS been extremely active. It's very exhausting for the parents!!

My 7 month old boy sleeps 12 hours at night 7am-7pm and takes 3, 30 minutes catnaps at 9, 12 and 3pm. I would die for longer naps so I can get something done around the house but am blessed to be sleeping at night.

My son is now 10m, but at 9m his schedule was...

6:30 to 7 a.m. Wake Up
7 to 8:30 a.m. Play and bottle/breakfast
8:30 to 10 a.m. Nap
10 to 1 p.m. Play and bottle/lunch
1p.m. to 3:30-4 p.m. Nap
4 to 7 p.m. Play and bottle/dinner
7p.m. Bath and bottle
7:30 p.m. Bed

This comes out to about 15hrs +/- an hour. It seems like a lot, but he is tired so I feel like let him sleep. Also at the sitter's he only takes one 2 hour nap, so i think on the weekends he catches up.

Every child is different. They usually set their schedule. My daughter got rid of her naps right before she started first grade and my son got rid of his before he was 4. So it is really up to the child in my estimate. Some need more sleep and others not so much.
Good luck

Jack, who's 8.5 months, takes about 1 two hour nap, and 1 cat nap closer to the evening. He then generally sleeps about 10 hours in evening, waking up once to be fed.

My son just turned 8 months old and he's never taken good naps. He usually takes 1-2 15-30 minute nap each day but then usually sleeps about 10 hours throughout the night. He didn't sleep that long overnight until about age 5 months though.

Each baby is different, but most 9 month olds still need 3 naps a day: a good morning and mid-day nap, and a late afternoon cat nap usually. I have worked in child care for many years, mostly with infants and toddlers, and most of the toddlers need at least 2 naps during the day until around 14 months.

Babies who are sleep deprived aren't able to learn as much when they are so tired. A baby who is sleep deprived can also seem over-active, as the adrenaline and hormones in their body start to kick in and keep them awake when they are desperately needing sleep.

Please make sure your baby is getting adequate sleep. Don't cut his naps back until he signals that he is ready (like when he starts to not go down for a nap on his own at his usual time). And when he does show he's ready, make is a slow transition, like more naps some days, and less naps other days, depending on what he needs that day.

A well-rested baby sleeps better than a sleep deprived baby, because of the hormones that I described above. Sleep is sooo important for his development. HIs brain is working wonders while he sleeps so let him sleep as much as he needs.

When my son was 9 months I think he was still taking 3 naps, each around 1.5 hours. He transitioned to 2 naps around 10 months. All babies are different, but I think the average age to go down to 1 nap per day is around 15 months. My son is 12 months now and takes 2 naps, each a couple of hours. He has always slept 11-12 hours at night.

Hello!

I have a 9 month old who has never napped. No matter what we've done, he just doesn't want to go down! Our pediatrician has always said that some babies just don't nap and to not worry. He's happy and healthy. Sure makes it hard on us, though! I fantasize about what I would do during naps if I had the chance. He has recently started taking a few 15-30 minute catnaps, mostly in my arms but I'm working on getting him into the crib after he's asleep (I know, I know, put them down tired but awake but that doesn't work for us!). For nighttime, he falls asleep around 8:00 (in our arms), transitions well to the crib and sleeps until anytime between 4-6 the next morning.

At 9 months my son was taking two 1 1/2 hour naps during the day (9:30-11:00 and 1:30-3:00) and sleeping at night from 8:30pm-7:30am. He is 14 months now and we are still on that schedule. HTH!!
