My son has missed 4 days, so far, and went to bed with an upset stomach tonight. I know 4 days isn't much, but it got me wondering what is average. My son is in Kindergarten, btw.
My kid is in kinder this year and has missed about seven days. Prior to her going to school she was never enrolled in preschool, day care or any other kid-filled place where she'd be exposed to lots of germs. She played at the park and had the odd play date here and there but she's an only child and has no cousins. She's pretty much sick all the time right now but we're hoping that by next year her immune system will be all caught up. Before school started she was hardly ever sick at all. Now it's a boogersplosion.

Three days each. Mine are in kindergarten. I work from home and don't need to take a sick day if I have a sick kid at home, so I think I err on the side of keeping mine home if they're not 100%.

My oldest son - not one day.
My youngest - two days - one because he fell at the bus stop and I thought he broke his wrist (and he was pretty bloodied up!!) and the other because he was sick.
Kindergarten? I don't remember any of my kids missing much!!

They have not usually been out sick more than two or three days per school year (they are 13, 17 and 19 now.) My son got pneumonia when he was 9 so he was out for a week with that.
I'm a bit of a "mean mommy" though, we follow the school guidelines when it comes to staying home, they must be fever, vomit and diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school, and staying home simply because they "don't feel good" is not reason enough. Having a headache, mild congestion, upset tummy or sore throat is also not reason enough to stay home, unless it is extreme (also per school guidelines.) When they are home sick they stay in bed, books/homework only, cold compresses, lots of liquids and no TV. I never wanted a sick day to feel like a vacation day :-)

All 3 of my kids have missed zero days so far this school year - I'm very grateful as they will miss over a week for vacation soon. 4 days isn't much, my oldest got swine flu in kinder(2009) and missed 8 school days, when his sister was 6 weeks old, then the school shut down for a week after that due to widespread illness - talk about crazy! My boys average 2 or 3 sick days a year....

My daughter is in kindergarten too, and so far she's only had to go home once in the middle of the day when she was saying her tummy didn't feel good, and she had broken out with a slight rash. She has not missed any full days so far but she's also not a kid that gets that sick that often.

I've not been as lucky as most moms this school year! So far my oldest has missed at least 14 days of school due to pneumonia & strep throat. Now she has a fever again and will be missing school again tomorrow. My middle daughter has missed 9 days of school due to pnuemonia. My youngest has missed one day of preschool due to illness. This is so unusual for our family. Last year our girls only missed 5 days the entire school year!

I think mine (K and 2nd grade) have missed maybe 3 or 4 days from being sick. We've had a couple days when I've had to pick them up early for a dr. appointment. Not for being sick but for food/medication allergy related stuff and the dr's didn't have any other available time. I don't think it counts as a day off if I pick them up an hour early.
Last year they both missed 2 weeks. We all had pneumonia back in March and my daughter ended up in the hospital, so she was out for 2 weeks and once she was back she had to sit out of PE class for another 2 weeks.
I wish they never had to miss school for being sick, but it happens.

In pre-k this year, she's missed 1 day for a dentist appt that involved mild sedation. Last year at this time, she'd probably missed at least 10 days as she'd had at least two bouts of strep, one bout of croup, an ear infection, and hives.

If your son is out sick for his fifth day in a half year of school so far, he's averaging a day absent per month, which comes out to 10 days in the year. That IS a lot. Not that you should send him if he's sick!
The most either of my kids was ever absent in any school year was 3 or 4. They are usually not absent at all. My son is in 8th grade and the last time he was ill enough to miss a day of school was in 6th grade. My daughter is a senior in HS and the last time she missed a day due to illness was in 4th grade. My kids just don't get sick. My older one has not been on an antibiotic since before kindergarten. My kids don't run fevers, they've never had strep, never had flu (and the oldest has never had a flu shot). Some kids are just more sickly than others.
Hope our little guy is feeling better from his tummy bug soon

I don't remember the number but my kids missed quite a few days in K and then the numbers declined as they got older. My 3rd grader really wants perfect attendance this year. I don't know where she gets that... I think in K, 5-6 days is probably average.

My 14 year old has only missed 1.5 days due to illness since August. One full day and .5 day when I had to go pick her up. Usually, she misses a few more days due to her enlarged tonsil acting up and a cold, but so far (knock wood), she's been well.
When she was in Kindergarten, she was out all the time. The kids just passed their germs around then.

My 2nd grader has missed probably 5 or 6 already, but part of it was a persistent case of pink eye. He missed two days last week because of a wacky fever that popped up. So he now has two tests to make up when he returns tomorrow.
I don't think my 5th grader has missed any yet this year (other than a little time around lunchtimes for dentist & orthodontist appts).

My kindergartener is home today--that makes 9 days so far. 7 of them have been sick days; 2 days have been after restless nights where he didn't sleep much (we had a power outage last night and he was terrified of the pitch black and then was too agitated to sleep after we brought LED candes), so he is home because I didn't think it fair to his teachers to try to handle him after having only 5 hours of sleep.

My GD is in 5th grade. Most years, she misses 3 - 4 days per year. BUT when she was in 2nd grade and again this year, she is missing a LOT. It seems like every 2 weeks she is sick. And I know she's sick and not pretending because she has had strep and has been running fevers and been congested. All things that I can see, hear and feel so not just going off of her saying she doesn't feel well.
Hubby and I are at our wits end. We would just like to see her make 2 full weeks of school!

He missed 1 day to go kayaking with his uncle who lives out of town and it was a special event, 2 days (Thurs-Fri) to go to Washington DC over the weekend, but 0 sick days. He's had allergies and a cold, but he never gets sick until Friday afternoon for some reason.
That was terrible when he was younger and had ear infections or something bad and we'd have to go to hospital because the doctors office was closed on weekends, but so far this kindergarten year, it's proven convenient to get over a cold and get his sinuses back in order.

DD is in preschool and has missed 3 or 4. It also depends on the kid how much they tend to miss. SS has a terrible immune system and catches some plague every winter no matter what and was out for at least a week roundabout Feb. SD didn't miss as much, maybe 5 days the whole year. So far DD has been healthier than their brother. If we were ever on the fence, we usually sent them and said to go to the nurse if they felt worse. Fevers or tummy bugs - stay home til symptoms have passed for 24 hours. DD's teachers have thanked me for following that guideline. See what "upset stomach" means in the morning. He might have just eaten too much or drank too much juice or was worked up about something and is OK in the AM.

Oldest has missed 4 or 5.
Second has missed 12...13 because of her appointment on Thursday. (She's the one who had surgery.)
Third has missed 11 because of the flu, pneumonia and bronchitis.
Youngest has missed 6 for the above reasons.
Second is in jeopardy of failing, but is being given a pardon because of the circumstances.
