How many sleep disorders have you heard of? Without doing a google search, name as many as you can.

This is strictly a curiousity thing... Kind of a 'poll' if you will.

So What Happened?

Tomorrow, I will share all the ones I know just because of my experiences. : ) Most will be shocked.

Ok.... Here are some of my personal experiences. Also, I was diagnosed with a sleep disorder after 30yrs of knowing something was wrong with me dispite no one believing me.

1. Idiopathic Hypersomnia - Complete opposite of Insomnia. I have the long sleep cycle Hypersomnia. As an infant, I was known to sleep 20 out of 24hrs in a day. As a toddler in pre-k, I slept 18+ hrs a day. As a teen, I'd get as much sleep as I possibly could with going to school and work. I finally got diagnosed at 30yrs old. If I'm not on my medication, I can go to bed at 8pm, wake up 11-12hrs later, be up for 2-3hrs, take a 3hr nap, and force myself to stay awake until 8pm.

2. Insomnia - My mother has issues falling and staying asleep.

3. Apnea - My husband has this one. Always worse when he drinks. (OSA - Obstructive Sleep Apnea being the more common - CSA Central Sleep Apnea)

4. REM Sleep Behavior - My ex-hubby has this one. I noticed that this only happened on nights that he was overtired.

5. Sleepwalking - My daughter does this. Noticed only when she's overtired.

6. Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) - I get this on occasion when I'm overtired and in a cramped place (i.e. on a redeye flight). My Aunt seems to get this a lot.

7. Narcolepsy - Don't know anyone personally, but a friend of mine does.

8. Sleep Paralysis - Usually accompanying another disorder.

9. Night Halucinations - Also usually accompanying another disorder.

10. Cataplexy - Generally speaking, accompanies Narcolepsy.

11. Circadian Rhythm - Days and night backwards. Us mom's know what that's all about... : )

12. Night Terrors - My daughter has had these. Not awake but screaming and sobbing like she's terrified but cannot remember anything about it.

13. Shift work sleep disorder - Pretty self explanatory.

I learned a lot just because I went through the sleep study process. I'm just glad that I found out my issues... It's quite a hinder to NEED to sleep all the time.

before I scrolled down to read other responses, I couldn't think of any. I only thought of restless leg syndrome but didn't know if that was a sleep disorder. But yes, now that i read answers, I'd have said 'insomnia and sleep walking' if my brain were working right.

I like Theresa's answer. My only sleep disorder is "HSATC" - Husband Stealing All The Covers.

<grinning> I'm excluding myself... 'cause I know all of the official ones... but there are also unnamed disorders that just get the description latinized. Ex) If someone passes out (aka is actually unconscious, instead of progressing onto the next natural sleep cycle) during a certain sleep stage it just gets called that in latin.

well going through one right now. i don't know what it is, maybe stress-related, but it's been weeks and weeks and weeks since i slept soundly last.
I may resort to ambien, considering I am sleepwalking all day instead.
