My son is 18 months and has been drooling since he was about 3-4 months old!! I am sure this is normal, however, I would love to know when it will stop. It isn't even on and off...he seems to drool all the time. Yes he has been teething since he was 10 months with his top teeth, then 1 year molars, and now eye teeth but I want to make sure there is an end in sight:)

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
just a quick note here, I work with 2 and 3 year olds. I had a 2 and a half boy who would completely drench his shirt from drool each day at school and seemed normal otherwise.
I had just not seen this much drooling in a child his age. I suggested she speak with her child's doctor and also said there could be some oral concerns as far as his speech and language and referred her to the pediatric place in Crystal Lake (speech and physical therapy). They do free evaluations there. Sure enough they determined he needed therapy to help him control his mouth muscles and speech sounds and so forth. I don't know what all they did with him and for how long but they did determine he needed services for it. The mom seemed grateful as her doctor dismissed it as not being an issue. She said she thought it was normal and that her mother said she had drooled a lot as a child. I know a certain amount of drooling is normal especially with teething and so forth. I just wanted to share my experience with a child who drooled excessively as a 2 year old. Just to keep in the back of your mind for info. Hope everything works out fine.

My daugher drooled until she was almost 2.5! We used to have to put a bandanna around her neck to catch the drool otherwise her shirt would be soaking wet. The funny thing was it never seemed to bother my daughter in the least to be all wet. Anyway, I think you're only supposed to worry if it goes on much beyond that age because it could be a sign of enlarged adenoids. Other than that, don't worry - I promise you'll laugh your head off when you look back in a few years (especially at the pictures!).

My son is two and he used to droom so much that even with a bib on, his chest would get chapped. Now he only drools once in a while. I hardly remember my daughter drooling. I think some little ones just drool more.

J.,
Just a little tid bit, (my son who is 10) drooled all the time. It got to the point that we would have to tell him to swallow! Still till this day we can catch him at times, and he is a drooler when he is sleeping. Just thought I would share a bit of humor about it with you...Usally after the teeth come in drooling will slow down.

I remember bringing it up with the pediatrician for my first son and he just laughed and said it's completely normal, some kids just drool more than others. I want to say age 2 is when the wet shirts usually stop. :) My second son is 23 months and doesn't usually drool anymore, but will sometimes still. And my 3 year old doesn't drool anymore. :)

LOL. Well, the drool seems never ending. I know. It doesn't stop until teeth come in or when their swallowing reflex is matured enough. My sons both drooled non stop (my eldest I swear drooled out of the womb). It did finally stop at about 18 - 20 months.
