How Long Should Teething-related Diarrhea Last?

My son started having runny poops last Friday. He's cutting molars. Today is Tuesday and he poops about 6 times a day, all very runny. I don't want to be concerned about it, but it's gone on pretty long. I hate calling the help nurse at my pediatrician because she always says to come in and I've taken him to the doctor about 10 times in the last 4 months. It's getting expensive, so if I can save a trip, I'd rather not just go in for every little thing.

What can I do next?

If he is otherwise happy go lucky and normal and he is staying hydrated well then I wouldn't worry about it. If he has no temperature and is sleeping well etc. then it's likely just his teeth.

I would try the BRAT diet to firm it up as much as possible too. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast in addition to his diet, not exclusively. They tend to firm up the poo.

There is some sort of intestinal "bug" going around. My husband had diarrhea for about 6 days, my 2-year old son had it for about 4, I had it for 4, and my mom had it for 1. Now the 19-month old friend of my son has had it for 5. It seems to be very contagious with no other symptoms other than a little loss of appetite, although I was able to eat normally, just had to run to the bathroom often! :) If there is no fever or other problems, the doctor will just tell you that diarrhea can last from 10 days to 2 weeks, so just wait it out. Make sure he stays hydrated and change his diapers often! :)

Is he having any other symptoms? That seems to me to be a long bout of diarrhea. I'd go ahead and call the nurse on this one, especially if he's running any sort of fever or rash.

The molars are the worst! My daughter had gross poops for a long time with the molars. I would wait it out and like NBinMN said, go for high fiber, no juice, etc. as much as possible. Once they cut through, which who knows when that will be, it should stop.

Unfortunately, in my experience with daycare kids...it can go on and off for a long time. Some kids are just more prone to this system upset which results in the diapers and for many the sore booty issues.

Try to offer bulking up foods (fiber)...no juice.....and change very very often. If a fever or change in appetite occurs, then I would be more concerned....but if you know this occurs with your child for teeth...wait it out is probly what you will need to do. I have seen many do this roller coaster for weeks till a tooth (or several) pop thru...then it seems a short reprieve before more start cropping up. Poor babies!

Good luck!
