How Long Did It Take for Your Child's First Loose Tooth to Fall Out?

My oldest is almost 7 and has had a loose tooth for 4 months. Today is the first time I could actually SEE the tooth move when she wiggled it, but it still feels very firmly rooted. Every other time I've tried to gauge how loose it was, I couldn't see or feel it move, though she assured me it was wiggly. She already has the adult tooth halfway erupted, waiting behind this baby tooth, looking much too big to fit in the space the baby tooth will leave. Obviously, it is getting looser but should it take this long? She has a dentist appt tomorrow, when the adult tooth first made it apperance I took her just to let them check it out and reassure me a "shark tooth" was nothing to worry about. The fact that her baby tooth is coming out so slowly makes me concerned that the adult tooth will be all the way in and then the dentist will have to pull the baby tooth. Anyone have expereince with this? I am just curious if this is long time or normal for a tooth to fall out?

What can I do next?

My 7 year old has never had any fall out. All have been pulled because of the shark...er, permanent teeth erupting behind them. At one point, she had two baby teeth flapping at an angle beside the grownup teeth. Not attractive. ome kids have long roots. If wiggling and snacking on apples doesn't do it in a month, I'd advise seeing a dentist.

My brother had 3 "shark" teeth with no problems. My sister had every tooth start growing in before the baby tooth fell out! Both of them have normal teeth. :)

I had a very crowded mouth, so when my tooth started coming in behind another, I had to get it and the neighboring tooth pulled to leave enough room for the adult. (I also had to have 4 permanent teeth pulled to make room... So my case was fairly rare.)

My son, age 6, had one of his first adult teeth on the bottom come in completely prior to his baby tooth actually falling out. I was scared this would cause him issues, it hasn't. Now the adult tooth is moving into place beautifully.

My almost 6 year old had 4 baby teeth pulled because two adult teeth were coming in behind them. The dentist was concerned to leave the baby teeth because the adult teeth could get stuck in the position too far back in her mouth. The adult teeth are now moving forward and looking good as they come in. We see a pediatric dentist, and he was WONDERFUL in the extraction. My daughter didn't have any problems, had shots and 4 teeth pulled with no worry, no tears, nothing! Easiest medically related procedure she's ever been through. Good luck!

My daugther was barely 5 when she lost her first tooth. My nephew is just a month younger and still hasn't lost one (they will be 7 in Dec and Jan). There is a great window of normal for this. My daughter has lost 6 teeth already and two of them did seem to be loose forever but she never had one of the adult teeth come through first.

We had this issue with our 6 year old. His adult tooth came in (fully) behind his baby tooth. The dentist had us wiggle the baby tooth and offered to pull it, but our son is already uncomfortable with dental visits, so we don't go with that option. We had our son wiggle it every evening as we read together before bed. It took about 3 months to get it out, and to the dentist's surprise, (and our relief) the adult tooth moved its way into the tiny spot (by loosening the other baby tooth). Now his two adult teeth have come in and moved into place, and the two baby teeth are gone.

Forever!!! We actually had a dentist confirm that her top tooth was loosening up a year before it actually fell out. She lost two bottom teeth before that one fell out. From a mom who can't stand looking at loose teeth it was pure torture!

Took awhile for wiggly to become truly loose, and then we had a very scared 5 year old, so it was a long time, but not 4 months. Some dentists will use numbing gel and pull them, or ours recommended rather than wiggling front/back to actually try to gently twist the tooth....within days it came out! And about two weeks later out came another! Good luck!!

Once my daughter's tooth was loose, it did seem like "awhile" before it came out. I think 2-3 months.
