How Late Is Too Late?

My best friend, of 15 years, is 21 yrs old. She has always had a regular period. She started when she was 12 and ever since has been right on time every month with her start date. For some reason, this time that lovely day never came. She is 2 weeks late now and has taken 3 pregnancy tests all of which have came up negative. Her boyfriend just left for Iraq and now this. With the tests being negative but still no period their minds are anxiously awaiting. I think she should go have a blood test done. I believe they are able to pick up the hormones better. She thinks she just needs to wait it out. So I am coming to you all for outside advice for her. She also has some health issues. She has a cyst on her kidney and has had surgery for that. She also has high blood preasure. Therefore, she would be considered high risk and kept a close eye on through out her pregnancy. Because of that I think it is even more important that she see a doctor just to be safe. On the other hand, if there is no baby then what could be causing her to be so late??? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

She should go see the doctor because it could indicate something more serious internally. Remember that the pregnancy tests say that incorrect reading could be the result of other complications. Pregnant or not, her health is important.

Hi L.,
Pregnancy tests that you pee on are not 100% accurate - there is a certain amount of error associated with the test and then there is also the human factor (but I'm sure your friend peed sufficiently on the stick!!) She really should go to her ob/gyn. They can do a blood test which I think gives 100% accuracy. And like the other ladies have said, there could be other things wrong that could cause a missed period. I know personally that some medications can cause it. My doctor wanted me to contact him when it had been 40 days since the first day of my last period - this means that you have not ovulated. I don't know if it has been that long for your friend, but she should at least call and ask her ob/gyn if she should come in. Best of luck! (I live in the Knoxville area and know of a great ob if your friend needs one!)

Well, there is definitely some reason she's that late, whether it be a pregnancy or not. She definitely needs to go see a doctor. There are many reasons, some serious, why she could be late or even miss a period. But, if she's so regular typically, I would definitely want to know why I was so late. She can get a blood test (they may do more than one) to determine if she's preggers, and if not, what else could be causing this. Best of luck to her finding out, and I hope her boyfriend stays safe during his time in Iraq. Keep us posted.

PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)possibly. She needs to have her hormones checked right away. Pcos also can cause high blood pressure.
