How Good/bad Are Boxed Hair Colors?

I need a hair change! I don't want to cut my hair, so I thought maybe slightly changing the color would be fun. I can't afford the salons outrageous price for highlights, nor do I want to keep up with those. So I'm wondering, if anyone uses boxed hair colors, is there any brand that's better than others? What are your opinions? I haven't used one since middle school when we snuck into our friend's bathroom and did it without telling mom and dad! :)

What can I do next?

No matter how much people want to sugar coat it box color is SOOOOOO bad for your hair. I own a salon and watch women day in and day out come to us for help. There is a reason why people go to school for this. They are professionals. If you can't afford the salon color then get a new style.

I couldn't even tell you what brand I use, because I try a new one everytime! But I love how cheap it is and that I can pick any change that I want. I don't go to the salon to change my hair either...just too expensive. I'd do it! I do suggest that you have someone help you! My husband loves it when he has to help me! :) Have fun!!!

I have used Preference by Loreal for 16 years and absolutely love it. The conditioner that comes in the box is like none I have ever been able to find on the market. Since I've been pregnant I've gone to a salon for highlights and hate how my hair is becoming coarse from it. Can't wait to go back to my box of Loreal!

According to my Brother, who is a hair stylelist out in California.....

Clairol is good, as is most Loreal, but he says to stay away from "Feria" and "herbal essences". Go with a demi-permanent if you are scared or not sure of the color since it will fade out instead of leaving "roots". Also, don't go any more than 2 shades lighter or darker than your natural color with a box color.

I personally just bought Frederik Fekkai (sp?) new hair color line that they sell at Sephora. It is $30, but I wanted to try it :)
