How Early Can a Child Lose a Tooth?

My son is turning 5 next week and to our surprise, already has a loose tooth?? I am not sure if this is too early or is this a dental concern that I should address with a dentist....I don't recall my oldest son losing any teeth at this age who is now 9. Does anyone know if this is normal?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for everyone's advice...after the first few responses I started resting a bit easier about the whole thing...well wouldn't you know it - the tooth came out today! So all seems well and we are expecting a visit from the tooth fairy tonight. :) I am still shocked but everyone's advice definitely eased my concerns. Thank you!

I remember losing my first tooth right before I started Kindergaten, so yes, I would have been about 5.

My son is 61/2 and has lost 6 of his baby teeth and now has all the "big teeth" in to replace them. Our dentist said anytime between 4-8 is normal (he lost his first lower middle teeth when he was 41/2) I was surprised too. The only thing I worry about is that now he actually looks like he is growing up, which makes me a little sad, since he is my only "baby!"

Have fun playing the tooth fairy!

Hi N.,

My son went for his 4 1/2 year old cleaning and had a loose tooth. It was just starting to get wiggly. Now, almost 9 months later, it's a more wiggly than it was before, but it will probably be a while before it goes anywhere. I was told that it wasn't unusual.

Good luck!!

Our oldest (now 12) lost his first one @ 5 and around 3 months later lost the one next to it. Remember "All I want for Christmas are my two front teeth"!! LOL! Our second son is 7 and has yet to loose any, which I addressed @ his last dental appt. and our Dentist said everyone is different, it depends on their inner structure. The 7 yr old is upset because his friends are loosing teeth and not him. Both my boys have very healthy teeth, no cavities ever, so it really depends on your own child. If you do feel your son is loosing them because of other problems call your Dentist but otherwise take pictures and celebrate!!

It is perfectly normal for him to be losing teeth at age 4 or 5. My oldest son which is almost 25 lost his first tooth at age 4 and has the prettiest teeth of any of my children never in his life has he even had a cavity which is GREAT! My youngest son who will be 6 in 4 weeks has never lost a tooth, he is exicted and ready to he says. LOL Good luck and don't worry it is fine!!

I wouldn't worry. I, myself, was about 5 when I lost my first tooth. You could check with the dentist, just to ease your worry, but it seems that he is at that age where it would be normal.

I am not a dentist but i was told it would be closer to 9 before I would have to worry about mine losing any teeth. You could call the dentist, just so they know and they can adress it IF there is a problem and they can put your mind at ease.

Hello, Just so you feel better, this is normal. Some children start to loose their teeth around 4, usually 5 or 6 is the average. Your older son was a little late at 9. Is your five year old bigger or physically more mature?? By 6 yrs old, children usually have on average 4 adult teeth. No need to worry. But yu can definitely take him to the dentist. It's never bad for a check up!
