How Do You Get Child to Swallow Medicine?

I am at my wits end with my daughter! She recently came down with a viral infection that brought on a fever of 103.2 for 2.5 days and now it's been replaced with an awful rash.
My point is, since Monday, it's been HELL getting her to take her medicine. I'm putting it down the back of her throat as suggested by the PEDI but she just uses her tongue to block and then spits it out! HELP!

What can I do next?

If it's meds to bring the fever down get a supository, that's way too important NOT to get the right dose in her little body. If it's something else, try mixing it with a little soda, Dr. Pepper is good because it's so sweet and helps mask the taste. You may way to shake it flat so the bubbles don't discourage her.

I don't normally let my little ones drink soda, but a spoonful of sugar sure helps the medicine go down!! ; )

Getting babies to take medicine when they are sick can be a real struggle. I'm sorry your little one is sick.

My oldest fought us tooth and nail over medicine. And she had constant ear infections so it seems like she was always taking something.

Here is a hold down trick. You sit in a straddle on the floor with your legs open. Lay your daughter between your legs with her head toward you. Put your legs over her arms and gently hold her head still between your thighs. You don't have to squeeze or apply pressure because she should be able to get out of this hold. Keep your medicine dropper and burp rag handy. Place the dropper in the side of her cheek and just drop in a few drops at a time. YOu can then hold her chin closed and blow in her face to make her swallow. It may take 5-10 minutes but it will get in her.

Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

Crush it and have her swallow the medicine with a spoon full of grape jelly (or whatever flavor jelly you have.) Jello would work too. Not only does it mask the tase but it slides down the throat faster than you can taste it!

Good luck!

If its a tablet, crush it (using two spoons, place the pill in the middle and push down on the top spoon) than put alittle water with it or juice, than she can drink it. My Mother did this for me for years because I had a hard time swallowing pills. If its liquid than mix it with a small amount of juice (something she likes to drink. Hope this helps and pray your daughter gets well soon.
