How Do You Feel About Having Your Tubes Tied?

I'm nearing the end of my pregnancy and considering which form of birth control I'll choose. After a difficult pregnancy (this is my fourth), which has included constant morning sickness and gestational diabetes, I'm pretty sure I'm done. My body feels like it's done with pregnancy.

So I'm thinking of having my tubes tied. However, I've just spent an hour reading through horror stories of women who've had awful experiences after having the procedure. They have terrible pain, awful or irregular periods, depression, mood swings, anxiety...all kinds of things.

I'd really love to hear from you mommas about your experiences with tubal ligation, the good and the bad. Hopefully there will be much more good than bad. :)

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Just had it done when I delivered my third son 17 days ago via emergency c section. So far the recovery has been no different than my previous c-sections.

Based on conversations with friends, I would say the emotional aspect is at least as important as the physical implications. Really think about it and make sure you are emotionally ready to close that door for good...

M., at my last GYN visit my MD suggested I have Essure which is a less invasive surgery where they insert spring coils in the tubes. You can read about it at essure.com. Good luck.

I had my second child in March, we knew we were done so I did have my tubes tied. I had a regular vaginal delivery so a few hours later they tied my tubes, going through my belly button. I will admit I was much more sore than I had anticipated. It lasted for a few days after I got home from the hospital. It wasn't any pain you couldn't live with, it was just uncomfortable, and I have a really high tolerance for pain. After those first few days though, all was fine. I haven't had any side effects and would highly recommend it if you are 100% sure you are done.

I had mine done the day my second son was born two years ago. I didn't have a c-section but the doctor did it several hours after I gave birth. The recovery wasn't anything horrible - maybe more achy in the stomach but nothing that I remember clearly so it couldn't have been too bad!

My periods are slightly more frequent (every 25 days or so, compared with 28 days), they do last longer (sometimes 7-8 days instead of 5), and two of those days are slightly heavier than before. I was on the pill for years before having this done, so it took me awhile to get used to the irregularity of the timing as well as the irritability for a day or two each month, which I didn't have on the pill. But not having to worry about taking the pill each night has been helpful!

I'm torn as to whether or not I would do it all over again if I could. I like being "chemical free" but it's so...permanent. I always thought I only wanted 2 children but now I think it would be nice to have more. I probably wouldn't feel that way if I COULD have another - it's probably just a case of the grass is always greener. So make sure you're done!

All in all, I think it was a positive thing to do for me. Everyone needs to decide for herself, though. Good luck in your decision!

Personally speaking...it's not for me! I am rather in-decisive at times and wouldn't want to do anything permenant! I guess I'll just leave how many children I'm supposed to have in God's hands! That being said, each person has to do what is right for them! :)

I am pregnant with my second (and last child) and will be having my tubes tied while I am in the hospital after giving birth. I think it is just a personal choice for everyone. I have been on birth control for a long time and decided I didnt want to go back to birth control.

I had my 3rd son and knew it was time to tie my tubes. I gave birth natural and they went in the next day to complete the surgury. It was easy and I was able to leave the next day. It's the best if you know you're done. You will have no more worries. : ) Hope this helps.
