i used a soapy pipe cleaner left over from a craft project.
I got a package of furry pipecleaners (versus the tinsel type) from Michaels. If you get the Sunday paper, they usually have a coupon for 40% off and it comes out to about $1 for 50 or 100. Fold it in half and use soapy water. A pipecleaner usually lasts about 4 or 5 washes and then I used another one.
I ended up buying my kids Thermos'. You can detach the straw and the push down lid keeps it from leaking. They have bottle baskets that have little flip down sides for straws but my straws have always stayed put when I slip them over one of the tongs on the top rack of the dishwasher. I wasted way too much money on those Playtex straw sippy cups, the Thermos has been a much better investment and they still have fun designs you can choose from:)
I just read that if you use alka seltzer tablet it cleans..have not tried but good luck.
There are "straw" brushes. I have one.
Try looking in drugstores or grocery stores etc.
Or Google search it.
Even E-Bay has it.
Use the search word "Straw Brushes."
the automatic dishwasher.............
Soak them in bleach & water for an hour or so until they are clean.
