My husband is considering taking a job offer in Coeur d Alene. The only thing that keeps him from not taking it is the bad stuff he has heard about CdA. Is it really as bad as ppl make it seem when it comes to racism. His only concern is with our daughter and I. I am puerto rican, making our daughter half. I know every town has its bad seeds but I have read of skin head organizations based out of CdA. Can someone tell me how it really is?

Thanks!

We were nervous about moving here too for that same reason (3 years ago) There was a small group of skinheads in the area several years ago, that group gave the whole area a bad reputation. They lost the "compound" in a lawsuit several years ago and it has now been turned into a park. The leader died about 3 yars ago and his "followers" have moved back east somewhere. Please know this was really a small group to begin with, but the entire area got a bad reputation. I run a sporting goods store and have several non-white customers and good friends. None have ever expressed concern over prejudice in the area. Perhaps this was a real problem several years ago, but from what I have heard from locals the skinheads were the "hated" group in the area and were basically forced out by the local population.

A.,

We just recently moved to the Coeur d Alene area. From what I have heard, the organizations you speak of, have been forced out of the area. Their leader passed away, and the government closed down their compound. Because I am so fairly new, I can't provide insight to the general public's attitude. Hopefully others from the area can give you more information.

I have lived in CdA (for short) for almost 16 years with my son and husband. This resort town has grown quite a bit over the last few years in particular. Although the history of this region includes some difficult times, I would say the overwhelming spirit of the community and region is one of family. You might find people who are less than welcoming because you are new to the area rather than whatever color ones skin might be. Some people will gritch about anything given the chance. Some enjoy complaining about Californians who have moved here. The reality is most of us came from somewhere else as well - come visit and see what you think!

I have lived here for 19 years selling real estate. The skinheads were a problem the first 10 years but now they have mostly been taken care of. Their leader died and the movements headquarters was moved back east. I do not think you would have a problem here as our area is getting more diversified all the time. Let me know how I can help you further.
