Hi Moms,

Do any of you know how to repel bees and wasps? I recently got stung by a bee and I don't want it to happen again! I am looking for something to put on my skin. Do you think insect repellent would work? Thank you!

What can I do next?

Perfume and scented deodorant both attrack wasps. If you avoid using these items it will help. Hair spray also attracts insects. When we were going in the woods my Dad would make sure I wasn't wearing anything with a perfumed scent as it does attract insects. Vinegar repells insects. when you wash your hair rinse it with white vinegar. Not only does it repell insects it gives your hair a super shine.

Hello M., I use Skin SO Soft for all my bug repellent issues. I am not sure if it will work for bees and wasps, but it does the trick for mosquitoes and ants.

Thanks,

Avon sells a product that is non-txic called SkinSoSoft. Perhaps one of the moms on this site is a rep. I don't know other than call your health food store and ask for a product. Usually, essential oils of orange, grapefruit and lemon are the base for a natural repellent.
As for the stinger, you've got to pull it out at the opposite direction it went in, so as not to suffer the end of the stinger stuck inside you.
A natural remedy for any insect bite is to put tobacco (my dad used to sacrifice half of his cigar) into hot water and make a poultice (cheese cloth is the best as it is a loose weave. Heat will draw poison out...that is why a hot bath with chicken pox is recommended. It's painful at first because you feel the poison coming out of your skin; but a huge relief after a 20-30 minute soak. Then you give the kid a popsicle!

I know of no repellant, be be aware of what you may be doing to attract them. Think of what they look for for food.. sweet smelling flowers.... avoid scented lotions, deoderants and perfumes, for a start. I would also avoid brightly colored clothing that might resemble a flower's colors.

And, having learned the hard way from my 2 yr old one morning many years ago, don't walk through the grass early in the morning when the dew is still on the grass. (He ran around on it one morning in sandals as I was putting a piece of mail in the mailbox). The dew on the grass attracts them and you don't realize they are there, because they are not flying around, they are "lit" on the blades of grass drinking from the tiny water droplets... you can step on them without realizing!

Avoid leaving sweet things like empty soda cans/bottles outside... unless you have thoroughly rinsed them out. The sugary stuff inside attracts them.

I've heard that Avon's Skin So Soft works. I have a networking contact that works for them if you would like me to ask her. It seems that stuff works for lots of things.
