Hey all! I'm sure I've seen this request on here before, but I couldn't find it! I bought from eBay an adorable sleeper for my soon-to-be-born little girl, and I canNOT get the moth ball smell out of it!!! It's been washed, dried, treated, etc AT LEAST 15 times over the last 2 months. I even left it out to see if it would air out, but no such luck. Any suggestions? I want her to be able to wear it, but I can't stand the smell! Thanks!

So What Happened?

After doing some research, etc and discovering how toxic they are, I decided it wasn't worth it and got rid of the sleeper. She'll have other cute stuff that I know won't harm her! Thanks!!

if it can be ironed, iron on a hot setting then hang it out in the sun. if it cant be ironed, hang it out in the sun as much as possible for a month. dry heat and plenty of air work best because of the make up of the mothballs. good luck.

Try washing with vinegar and baking soda with vinegar in fabric softener "cup". Then dry out in the sun. Good luck stripping the residue left by the mothballs... if you can't it isn't worth putting on your precious little one.

I know you washed it a lot, but mothballs are really unhealthy, and because it is newborn, I would say to forget it--see link about dangers of mothballs and their fumes.

Hi- Like the other Mom I think you should be careful. Mothballs are really toxic and if you can still smell them then they are still giving off fumes. If it were my newborn I would toss the sleeper. Sorry! Kari

OMG, I didnt realize that these things were toxic. My mom is obsessed with them. I told her that I think they stink. She thinks they smell divine! My 21 month old daughter was walking around with one in her hands when we were over at my parents one time. I took it from her hands immediately but didnt do much else but tell my mom to get them out of her reach. Thanks for writing this post, now that i know they are also so toxic, I am calling for family intervention! Hopefully my sister can help me convince my mom to get rid of these toxic moth balls!
