It sounds like the infection is gone, but maybe the runny nose is due to allergies now?
Right, my 3.5 yr old is struggling with sinus issues since Sept. finally took him in 10 days ago was dxd with an acute sinus infection and was given Omnicef for 10 days. The dr. told me if he's not better call him so we can set up another appointment.
So last year when my son had a sinus infection it was more of clearish nasal discharge that just would not go away that eventually landed in his chest. I tried all the OTC allergy meds at that time and I couldn't try them long enough to see if they worked because they caused behavior issues I wasn't going to cope with. so 6 months later, they finally gave me a 10 day course of amox. simply because I told them his chest won't clear up until I get his nose to stop running. When he was done with that antibiotic his nose stopped running and I had my healthy kid back.
This time from the 3rd week it was a very thick, nasty green nasal discharge that wasn't getting better. Eventually his whole face seemed to be getting puffy and he was mouth breathing horribly so that's why I took him in. NO cough or fever or anything. Well 10 days into Omnicef his nasal discharge has changed from the horrible green thick snot to running clear (which is good), but its profuse again like last year. Of course, with that now he has a horrible junky cough (which is typical for him it always runs to his chest). So my question is--it does seem to be improving, but should I still take him in or call because its still running profusely? He's behavior seems fine, he's sleeping fine, it just sounds and looks bad. No fevers.
I know with Zirthomax the antibiotics continue to work even after taking them, should I wait a week and then call? His cough won't go away until I stop his nose from running, and then I'm always fearful of a secondary chest infection. I plan on trying his Singulair this week, but was told its not going to help with his nose symptoms, but prevent future ones, does that sound right as well?
Thanks ladies---so far I think you were right about allergies causing his runny nose. He woke this morning with really puffy eyes and kind of stuffy, but no nose running. So since it was horribly windy here to today and I wanted to take them outside I thought I'd go ahead and try Claritan again for starters and see if I notice a difference. yay--so far no behavior issues (which was not the case last year) his nose didn't run at all while outside (while mine was running like a faucet) and he woke from his nap and his eyes are no longer puffy!!!

i agree it sounds like the infection is gone but the nose could be running due to allergies. flonase helps a lot with that if you haven't tried it. call the doctor and explain what you just told us and see what he recommends.
I would think his nose would be done running by now. Maybe he's caught another cold on top of this sinus infection? Maybe call and ask them, or just take him back in. Hope he feels better soon!
It sounds like the infection is gone but it is going to take time for everything to heal. You may want to try saline nasal spray or a sinus rinse bottle (yes it comes in a pediatric size).
If his cough is productive or doesn't clear up you may want to have the pediatrician take a listen to make sure there are no signs of pneummonia.
Wow, I could have written this! My three year old daughter is having the SAME situation. Her nose was running clear after a round of Omnicef and her cough went away. Now, a week later, her nose is running green/yellow again. She is acting fine...eating, sleeping, etc., but i'm not sure if it is an infection again!? I give her claritin daily, but I don't think its doing anything and might try Allegra (different active ingredient). I tend to think its all allergy related (with your son too). Good luck. Let us know how it turns out and what the doctor says. I'll be watching the responses closely too for some advise myself!
