How Do I Get My 9 Month Old to Start a Sippy Cup?

Hey, I am trying to introduce the sippy cup to my 9 month old boy. He has been breastfed his entire life. He gets a bottle every once in a while with juice in it or if someone else feeds him and that's it. I am trying to get him started on a sippy cup because when he is a year old I am going to try to stop nursing him. I would like him to go from nursing to a sippy cup and I don't want too much of a change. I have put juice in it and helped him with it, but he uses it more for teething than sucking. He chews on it and gets juice all over him. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

To introduce my kids to the sippy cup I never replaced the breast/bottle with the cup. Instead, I made it part of their solids meal. At first I held it for them until they actually got the hang of it, and then they held it themselves. Don't make a big deal of it, just incorporate it into the meal as if it's always been there.

I would mix up the liquids in the cup so he doesn't associate juice with the cup. Just make it a regular part of the meal and he will get the hang of it.

I would also take it out with you on shopping trips, etc. Only give him liquids in the cup when you are out (no bottle) so that he gets used to that also.

It does take a little time, but he will get used to it. I breastfed both my babies (supplemented w/bottle w/first) and my older son was off the bottle by 9 months and my younger by 10 months. I would think that if your son is not too attached to the bottle he will get the hang of it quickly also!!

Good luck!!

He may even take a baby cup with a straw easier than a sippy cup...maybe introduce a couple of things and see what he takes to.

I used the Nuby sippy cups to transition my daughter to the sippy cup. They are available at Target, Walmart, Babies R Us, etc. They are great as they have a soft center allowing her to push it into her face/ mouth without too much discomfort. She took to them really well. She isn't quite a year yet but I don't anticipate too big of a transition to a regular sippy cup. Good luck.

I used and Loved the Gerber Transition Cups. You can find them at Wal- Mart. It will take time and he probley wont get it, but over time and practice with the cup he will eventually get the hang of it.

My youngest would only do the straw cups (and still will to this day!). You got some great advice . . . the only thing I know to add is that if you're going to do a regular sippy cup put him in the bathtub with it and put juice in the cup. Take out the little plug and let him make a mess. He'll figure out that there is "good stuff" to drink in there and then you can put the plug back in and work on it that way. All you have to do is rinse him off - no muss no fuss. A friend of mine gave me this advice and it worked for my oldest.
