Hi ladies,

I am looking for recommendations on losing about 10 pounds and maintaining a healthy diet. I know I should eat better, and I'm looking for a diet plan that will actually tell me "eat this for breakfast, snack, lunch, etc..."

I am almost 45 years old, in menopause, and I am packing on the belly/thigh fat. I have always been thin, and I have never been active in my life! I have started back on my treadmill, but I am a snacker, and I think I sabotage whatever progress I make on the treadmill with my poor eating habits. Anyone have a diet plan or book they recommend like Being Healthy for Dummies? :O) I feel I need something that will actually tell me exactly what to eat and when, as well as some easy exercise that won't get me discouraged.

Thank you!!

Try Weight Watchers. I have several friends who have not only lost the weight, but have kept it off b/c you learn "how" to eat and "when" to eat.

Just keep in mind that the ONLY way to drop the weight is to eat less and move more. It's a simple equation and if you just keep that in mind, it will help.

If you have never been an active person, then start with walking and other activities that don't "feel" like exercise! You could try swimming, Jazzercise, or other low-impact activities that are fun and easy to get into whether you are an active person or not!

Try Sparkpeople.com it is free and they have it set up where you can log in what you eat and if you want it will even generate a meal plan for you. Plus they have free workout videos, support, and advice. It is kind of like Facebook but strictly for weight loss and it is free ( did I mention that already). I love it, it is motivating, and I have lost 20lbs since starting. I want to lose more but my body is stuck in a plateau which I am working through with the help of Sparkpeople.

Good luck.

A diet might help you lose weight, but only a lifestyle change will keep the weight off and keep you healthy =) check out the Biggest Loser book, just type it in the search bar of amazon.com...its not about losing weight, its about being healthy =)

30 minutes of exercise/day, and 1800 calories/day as long as you are losing weight. Bump it up to 2000 calories/day when you reach a weight you want to maintain.

I'm 31 and just started a new workout program. It's pretty intense, and I make it a little more by adding additional workouts, and by working out 7 days instead of the recommended 5. Its an online program called BodyRock. The website is www.BodyRock.tv I am VERY happy with it. However it's not for everyone.

I like that it provides a daily (5x a week) workout that is different almost every day. There is NOT a video I have to follow along with but instead a 5-10min instructional video that shows you the proper form, and easier variations for beginners. Most of the workouts are interval training (google HIIT High Intensity Interval Training) lasting anywhere from 10-60min. Most of the workouts are 15min or less. There is very little equipment that you HAVE to buy but if you wanted to keep up with the Jones's you'd spend about $150 on equipment. I can do all of these workouts from home. I don't have to go to a gym and workout if front of other people. My face tends to get bright red when I'm working out and it makes me VERY self conscious when I work out in front of other people keeping me from putting forth maximum effort.

I also like that she offers a diet and nutrition plan. Portion control, and low carb. You earn the simple carbs (bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, etc) you eat through a workout. You can eat complex carbs (qunoia, oats, couscous, etc) with your meals but make sure they are in small portions. 5-6 small meals a day with one portion (size of your palm) in lean protein (chicken, turkey, fish, FF cottage cheese, nuts, beans, etc), and 2 cups of fruits and veggies. I've eaten more salads than ever!! The website has many recipes and the online community is great for providing ideas as well.

I haven't really lost much weight, but I wasn't trying to. I have lost A LOT of fat, and can see my muscles! I'm very close to a 6 pack!! I also use an app on my phone called myfitnesspal there is an online version of this www.myfitnesspal.com if you don't have a smart, i, droid, or other phone that uses apps. From everything I've heard losing weight is 80% food and 20% exercise. If you're putting the wrong things in the body you won't be able to lose the weight.

I do not like all the jumping, so I modifiy most of the workouts to make it easier on my knees. It's not hard but I wish that the there were more workouts she offers without jumping. Also the person that runs the workouts (Zuzana Light) was a previous adult star. So there is a little too much focus on her "ladies" and I thought this would take away from the workouts themselves but...when I started doing the workouts I focused less on her enhancments on more on how GREAT my body was starting to look.

Like I said this isn't for everyone...but it's GREAT for me. I hope you're able to find a perfect fit for you too. I am, and I feel healthier than I have EVER felt in my life.

My SIL loves sparkpeople.com. It helped her lose over 30lbs. It is also an online community that gives recommended meals and I think (but maybe not) workouts, plus a calorie counter. I have not used or known anyone personally that has used weight watchers but I think it also sounds like a GREAT program!

GOOD LUCK!!

I'm a grazer, too. I snack on fruits and vegetables and nuts. Go totally gluten-free for a while. Then, just be careful about how much gluten you consume. It'll make you more aware of what you put into your body, also.

Eat 5-9 servings of veggies and fruits per day, preferably raw. Then work on making lifestyle changes, but not too many at once. Like add breakfast that includes a glass of water, fiber (oat meal, fruit or n-- uts) and protein (egg whites or protein shake) the first week. The next week, increase water intake and do sit ups after the tread mill. And so forth. Don't try to change every thing at once.
Books I recommend are Just 10 Lbs by Brad Lamm and Forks over Knives, which is coming out next month. You can get these on Amazon.com.
Let me know if you are interested in supplements to help with menopause.

My husband & I both have found that the key to our weight loss is SNACKING! We eat a sensible breakfast, then eat every 2-3 hrs, a sensible lunch, then eat every 2-3hrs, etc. This way, no meal is overly large, and we don't get "crazy hungry". The snacks are small, right around 100 calories. One example would be one serving of wheat thins with one serving of cream cheese. It's yummy & satifying. Just keep your portions under control.
When we needed guidance, the plan that made the most sense was Food Lovers. It walks you through the snacking plan. We've always known that frequent meals was the key, but this spelled it out for us. Do we follow it to the letter? No. I'm HORRIBLE about writing down what I eat. However, I've gone from a 14 down to 8! I've lost about 15 lbs in 4 months!

You can lose weight on a plan that tells you exactly what to eat and when, but it doesn't really teach you lifelong good eating habits. At some point, you need to know what you can eat and how much to make smart choices yourself.

For this reason, I'm a fan of Weight Watchers. I lost 20 lbs. with them last year and have kept it off. You learn what are smart choices and what are not. I did their online only program and still got good results. They give you points for any physical activity, even time spent vacuuming. They just want you moving in some way to burn calories and stay healthy. No food is off-limits. You learn to budget your points for when you want to splurge on something or just eat splurge items in small amounts.

Good luck!

Jenny Craig! It is easy, the food is good, and I lost 9 lbs in 6 weeks. Average weight loss is 1-2 lbs a week, more if you exersice a lot. I spend about $115 a week on buying the Jenny food, which may sound like a lot, but it really isn't. I am a full time working mom of two, so I needed something easy and this is!
Good Luck.

If you need a book to guide you and tell you, I'd recommend, "Six Week Body Makeover." I lost 16 pounds my first week, 4 lbs the second week and 5 pounds the 3rd week.

I was amazed. They tell you if you don't loose 2 pants sizes or two dress sizes over 6 weeks they will give you your moey back.

I figured I couldn't loose either way. Either I lost the weight or it cost me nothing.

Good luck to you and yours.

I do not have a diet plan because I have been small all my life. I am 54 with two children and weigh 123. I only gained weight when pregnant. I am a picky eater. I eat every two hours or so, but I snack on fresh fruit, nuts such as walnuts, pecans, almonds, and walnuts. I eat pineapple pieces, watermelon, cantaloupe, and mushmelons. I also snack on broccoli, tomatoes, and carrots. I always try to eat a salad with my meal if it is fish. I eat frozen veggies, chicken, turkey, and boudin(crawfish). I eat cornbread with my meal every once in a while. I drink mostly water, tea, and juice. I also , using my Wii sport. I eat sweets mostly when I visit mom. Sit down with a glass of water when you are eating and drink while you eat. Also, eat fruit just before you eat. This help with the breaking down of the food quicker. I hope this helps.

Sounds like you want something like Jenny Craig. I have friends who did really well on Jenny Craig. I lost 37+ on Weight Watchers and that worked for me because I could eat whatever I wanted as long as I stuck to the plan. You can do Weight Watchers online too , I never attended a meeting. Their web site offers recipes and tons of info. Good luck I hope you find something that works for you!

I have lost 82 pounds over the past three years. I still eat sweets cuz I always will....
I make sure to exercise every day. I use Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred and as much as I hate it, it's working. I do it 20 minutes/day, three days/week. On Friday, I take the day off. On Saturday and Sunday, I drop my husband and son off at the park for an hour and I walk briskly around a local lake for about 4 miles.
During the work week, I eat 2 eggs and a whole wheat English muffin. For lunch I have a salad or a lean cuisine. I snack on protein bars and I do allow myself a 100 calorie cookie pack. For dinner, I eat what the family eats but in smaller portions. We have gotten smaller plates which has helped me with the smaller portions. I plan out my meals a head of time so that when I cheat I make it up at the next meal.

I know when I will gain weight and when I will lose and adjust accordingly. I go months at a time not losing anything but working to maintain.

I also chase a 3 year old who has more energy than you could imagine.

Finally, when we go out to eat, I make sure to take half home.

Take it slow. If I can do it, you can do it.

Good luck and don't be hard on yourself or it won't work!!!
