How Can I Get Pregnant While Still Breastfeeding My 15Month Old Daughter?

I want to breastfeed my daughter until she's 24months. We are trying for another baby but I'm finding it difficult to conceive. My relatives including my mom said I should stop breastfeeding if I want to take in again.

What can I do next?

My second was conceived when my first was 24 months and still breastfeeding. I literally had ONE period between pregnancies, so you don't necessarily have to wait to be regular to conceive again. Just have sex for fun, it will happen eventually!!

Breastfeeding is not a great birth control method.
So I wouldn't worry about it.
Chances are the same thing would be happening if you stopped breastfeeding.

JB is incorrect. You do not need to have regular periods (or periods at all) in order to ovulate. This is one of the reasons some woman get pregnant not too long after having a baby. They think if they haven't had a period yet, they can't get pregnant. Surprise!

I have always had very irregular periods. Always! I have two kids. My secret?

JUST HAVE SEX!!!

Try to relax and not think about getting pregnant and enjoy having sex. If you think about it too much, you will get stressed and that stress makes it harder to conceive.

It's fine that you're still breastfeeding. Breastfeeding as a form of birth control really only works when it is your child's only source of food/drink. And even then it's not 100%. That's why one of the first post-pardum questions your OB asks is "What form of birth control are you using?"

If you want to get pregnant relax and JUST HAVE SEX. If you don't conceive in the next 6 months, talk to your OB.

Yes. You can get pregnant while breast feeding. It's an old wives tale.

i had irregular periods, was breast feeding a 12 month old 2x a day, and on a mini pill. i missed one pill and got pregnant. so anything is possible. i suggest you relax and enjoy your child and when shes asleep enjoy your hubbby whenever you feel like it. stress can hinder pregnancy chances so just hope for the best and if it has not happened after a year of trying then cunsult your dr for guidance. fertility friend . com is a website that can help you track your cycles and leanr when you are most fertile. i know several women that have successfully used the site to get pregnant.

Yes. You can get pregnant. I did. But I'm NOT YOU. I NEVER had regular periods, EXCEPT when I was on birth control. So if you aren't having periods? You might not be ovulating. You NEED to talk with your OB/GYN and figure out what your is doing.

You have a 15 month old that you want to breastfeed for NINE more months....I get it. I breastfed my oldest son for over 2 years, even when I was pregnant with his baby brother. I quit breastfeeding him when I was 6 months pregnant. I also potty trained my oldest son at that time so I didn't have two kids in diapers at the same time.

I know more than one mom who thought she couldn't become pregnant while breastfeeding, and now has an "oops" baby. So, it is possible.

Have you tried using an ovulation kit to see if you are ovulating? That will help you with timing.

Most of my children were conceived while I was breastfeeding!

I think part of it was that while were not 'trying' to conceive, we were happy if we did. So, the sex was recreational as opposed to pro-creational.

And the previous comment about self weaning was absolutely true in my case. The other child seemed to know *I* was pregnant almost before I did.

Relax. ENJOY!!
best

When you're breastfeeding regularly (every few hours) you aren't ovulating. Or most women aren't. Once your baby eats solids and sleeps through night you're supposed to go on a mini pill (or I did) to ensure you don't get pregnant. You might ovulate, and you might get a period or have spotting otherwise.

You don't mention how often and how much she's nursing. So that would play a part.

Good luck :)

I think that having kids 2-3 years apart is a nice age gap. I do think finding out if you're ovulating is a big step towards finding out if your body is making what you need for a pregnancy.

I don't know why you picked 24 months, but I can tell you that I don't ovulate while breastfeeding.

If you have regular periods then you are ovulating and can become pregnant. I got pregnant while breastfeeding and taking the mini-pill, it happens all the time. If your periods are regular, breastfeeding isn't the issue. If your periods aren't regular, then you would have to decide which goal is more important right now.

I do know lots of moms who conceived while breastfeeding. Some mentioned that their child self weaned as the breast milk changes when you are pregnant.

Keep at it - you'll get there. And give your OB/GYN a call. They might suggest an ovulation kit or something else.

Unless you are EXCLUSIVELY breastfeeding (not supplementing with any solid foods, which I hope is not the case for a 15 month old), then you should be able to become pregnant. Although, your cycles may not be as regular, so it could take longer. But another consideration is whether you *should* become pregnant if you intend to continue nursing for another 9 months. I know that you *can* do that, but whether it is optimal is another concern, and one that I'd ask my OB about.

You didn't include enough info here. Do you have a regular period? What do you mean by "take in again"? That's confusing.

Have you talked to your ob/gyn?

Yes you can get pregnant while breastfeeding though it may take longer than if you were not breastfeeding. Just keep trying and nature will take it's course, you'll conceive when your body is ready.

Every body is different. I conceived our son whIle breastfeeding my 12 month old. I nursed her through my entire pregnancy and still do-- she is three. A friend of mine had to stop nursing her 12 month in order to get pregnant. Ovulation tests can be very helpful. If you are ovulating, then no need to stop. If you are not, it would be best to reach out to a lactation consultant. Best of luck.

Having unprotected sex is the only way. You might have to stop breastfeeding. But, I have three friends who all got pregnant while breastfeeding. None of them had started their periods again. All of them were completely surprised by their pregnancies. Everyone is different.

I believe the frequency of breastfeeding is a factor as well but not 100%, if you go down to 2 feedings a day, you will be more likely to conceive. I also second buying those ovulation kits.
