How Can a 37 Year Old Mom with NO Rhythm Learn to Dance?

Ok, this is a little embarrassing and not exactly a critical issue but I was looking for recommendations on videos that can teach someone how to dance. I really enjoy dancing but am always self conscious in public because I really don't know what to do. I don't know where to put my arms, I have absolutely no rhythm. I have taken local dance classes but they really just teach a routine, which I can do. I can learn the mechanics and do it, I just look like a robot! So rigid and no bounce in my step, you know? I love dancing around the house with my 2 year old and of course she doesn't care what I look like but I'd like to improve myself so I am not so self conscious and weddings and parties. I just look like I am trying too hard. Anyone know of any videos that can help out this rigid robot? thanks!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks everyone - great suggestions! We do have a Wii so I will look into the Just Dance game. And at some point after this pregnancy I will hopefully be able to look into taking something like Zumba or maybe ballet somewhere. To CAWriterMom, I can't believe the dance instructor singled you out like that - how unprofessional and awful! I would have left in tears too! I also like the idea of checking out Amazon and looking at reviews. I hope there is some hope for me! Thanks so much to all of you ladies!!

So just do the robot...kidding. The only way to overcome it and get better, is to keep doing it. I used to go out dancing all the time and had no problem going up to the higher tiers where others could see us dance, but now am just a rock n roller, no more dancing for me. So with that, I can't move anymore.

So get out on the dance floor and tune everyone else out. Once at a neighborhood summer concert, I saw a Grandma out there groovin and a young man just danced with her nearly the entire concert. We all enjoyed her energy.

@ Grandma T, I dance with the bride and groom while I photograph them. I can't imagine what it looks like from the guest view, but I have to do what it takes to get my shots!

I just have to say I have no rhythm either. so praise God that there is others.
Country music dancing seems to be the easiest dancing I have seen LOL. Have no advice on videos. Is there a local dance place near by you that will give lessons. I would think that would be a lot easier with a partner to help you. Good luck and keep us posted.

i have an idea... i came with literally no rhythm what so ever... my mom decided to put me in ballet, i now have wonderful rhythm and can dance to pretty much anything, i wasnt in that long either. see if they have a school that where you can get classes maybe with your daughter, making it a bonding experience, who knows, she may grow up to love it. the way my teacher put it to my mom when she was told i had no rhythm, was, within a year of classes (once a week for only about 30 weeks, you can add more classes to the week, to help it go by faster) she will have almost perfect rhythm, and she will walk like a dancer for the rest of her life. i may not be able to play the drums, but i can find a beat, stick to it, dance to it, and yea i still walk like a dancer :)

It always baffles me that people can have no rhythm. You can't hear the drum beat in music and snap or clap to it? If you can, then you do have rhythm. If you cant hear the timing of the music then I dont suppose you could dance very well.
My mom always told me that when you are dancing with your husband you move just like you do if you were making love (a refined rendition).... so basically that's how we dance. You just let go and let the music take you over and it's so fun. Hubby and I used to dance all the time, but since I hurt my back we dont get to do it much anymore..... dangit.
Sit and watch other dancers, when you see one that you like, remember her moves and practice at home... but in all reality everyone has their own technique and there are no rules for how music moves you. You'll notice that no two dancers dance the same. The only time everyone does the same thing is when its a choreographed dance like a line dance or a waltz.

You probably look like you're trying to hard because you're trying too hard! Let loose and stop caring what other people think of how you dance! I remember my aunt used to be so up tight, in general, and it showed in her dancing too! she used to do this thing with her arm, kept it bent, we finally pointed it out to her and she stopped! Just have fun!

there are a lot of dance video games now- all my neices and their friends learn from those. that can show you moves and also help with your rhythm. its also a good workout :) get a Kinect or Wii-or something like that, youll learn some moves. your daughter could probably do it with you.

now that i am older and rarely go dancing, i am much more self concious when i do and if you dont dance much that is probably hard to get around. :)so turn on the music and have a dance party with your daughter ! after you get some ideas from videos/video games-, you need to just do it a bunch til you figure out what you feel comfortable doing. and lastly, relax- dancing is supposed to be fun and if you're worried about what you look like, its not fun! just keep your thumbs in (no Elaine from Seinfeld) and even if you're off a bit, it will be fine!

If you are just talking about freestyle dancing, what helps me is to put on some music, close my eyes and just feel the music. With your eyes closed, your body will just naturally move to the beat of the music. It's usually best to do this in a dark or dimly lit room with no one else around when you first start. If you do this enough times and just allow yourself to move whichever way your body naturally wants to move, eventually you will feel comfortable enough to go get your groove on in public.

My only additional thought, without experiencer, is I wonder if you could practice clapping along with a song. If that doesn't work, ask your potential dance instructors what they would recommend for you to do to get with the beat. If they say that they can teach that, ask for references that you can call and check.

I believe you can do it! My niece was tone deaf early on and she later became the first chair (best) of her instrument in the orchestra. If she can learn that, bet you can learn how to keep a beat!!

Have you ever taken a zumba, salsa or other dance fitness class? They are super fun, have great music, teach dance steps and follow a beat. It's a good way to loosen up and get that bounce in your step. But because their primary purpose is to exercise, there's no pressure to "perform". I'd suggest taking a variety of classes from different teachers if it's available. You will learn alot of different styles and moves that way, and get lots of practice. You will also get to watch yourself in the mirrors and learn from watching the other students, too. Have fun and keep on dancing!
